Haven't read your journal in while. Looks like you got a lot done in the barn. We went from rain every day with flooding in the garden to NO RAIN at all in almost 2 weeks. Now that we need rain we can't seem to get any.

Hope the hen keeps improving. Sounds like she has some major problems. But you also sound like a good hen Dr.

Ah, burn bans. We get them in the dead of summer because, obviously, the Pacific Northwest doesn't dry out very much. But my step dad built a super-duper burn pit in defense of his pyro leanings. He dug straight down about four feet, by four feet wide. He lined the bottom with sand and gravel, and the sides with cinder blocks. The top comes up one block higher than the ground. He has a strong 3/4" mesh that he lays over the top to prevent large sparks from escaping. He surrounded the outside with two feet of sand, to prevent small sparks from igniting.

...he's crazy. But most of our bans are on open, or uncontrolled fires, and exclude fire PITS.

I hope you get enough rain to green things up a bit, but not too much!
