I very rarely yell, so when I do, EVERYONE stops what they are doing. Most of the time when they were young, I would count to three and then it was a quick swat. Then came the day I came into the living room and found the dog lolling on the couch, which is a no-no. I told her to get down, and she just looked at me. Without stopping to think, I firmly said "One!" The dog got the most stricken look I've ever seen on an animal and DIVED off the couch! It was a hoot!

I did more yelling at my youngest, as he got closer to 18 -- maybe just getting tired of taking care of kids? lol
That is SO funny about the dog

I really don't yell alot either, but this last one grates my nerves worse than any child ever has. I may be just getting tired of taking care of kids too, but she really pushes me sometimes. Thankfully, she has been better lately :D Oops...maybe I shouldn't have said that......

When I said less talk - more action, that was from years of working with children with Autism and behavior disorders. Try yelling at an autie!

I tell them in a normal quiet voice to do whateverthing. I may even ask them twice. Then I walk over the the person and gently MOVE them into the correct position.

~ You train a Husky the same way ~ :hide No yelling necessary.

After a few go rounds they are VERY certain that I will just come and move them so they suddenly begin to listen to that quiet voice and start to follow directions. I wish I had learned this a lot sooner. I yelled at my kids a lot as well, especially in the beginning. Looking back I realize that most of the time when I was yelling I was very busy. I just needed to learn to stop what I was doing and be physically involved in training my kids at that moment. Hard to make yourself do when you are as busy as we are.

Another thing I learned was the whole fighting with each other thing. Usually I just remind them that THEY need to settle the differences or I will be involved and neither will like my solution which usually involves removing a toy for a while and extra chores. That usually works well. The whole "He/she/they are being mean to me" is nicely solved as well, by total agreement. "Oh you right. You had better come and sit beside me, so that I can protect you." No books. No toys. No fun, mind you, but you are SO SAFE! It is amazing how quickly they are ready to live more dangerously! I usually keep them for an extra little bit of "protection" to make my point and I seldom have returns.

Thanks for all the tips guys....yesterday we had a really fun day. We did lots of science experiments and got out Tyler's microscope. I let Tyler color but made him read the instructions in some of his activity coloring books and he did pretty well. We worked on density, the color wheel, non-neutonian substances, and acids and bases and their properties. It was really cool. My mom got Tyler a really nice microscope last xmas with 200 prepared slides. We spent about an hour just looking at the different slides and I had to break out the dictionary to find out what some of the stuff really was :p Then we looked through some of the kids reference books and talked about the human body and all the different "stuff" inside us and what the brain does, left side and right side. My daughter pulled one of my psychology books down off the shelf and pretended to "read" it to me. Then last night we read 2 more chapters of Charlotte's Web.

When hubby got home I left to go to the chiro and he took the kids with him to the dump and to get gas for the lawnmower. At the chiro I got a new bruise. When he went to adjust my lower back and hips he slammed my left thigh into the table  I told him that I couldn't afford to go twice a week any more so he said we could start some rehab exercises along with my one adjustment each week. Then I headed to TSC and the grocery store. I didn't do too badly, I guess, $150 for a month's feed for the birds and a week's worth of groceries for us total. With me going to the chiro every week I'm really trying to plan out our menus a lot more. I've posted it on the fridge for the week. Yesterday I put a deer tenderloin in the crock pot with some carrots, onions and potatoes and 1/4 stick of butter, 2 garlic cloves, 1/8 cup of Bragg's Amino Acids (in place of soy sauce) and some salt and pepper. I left it on low all day so Chad wouldn't have to cook while I was gone.

We are going to our last summer $1 movie in about an hour. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, which we haven't seen yet so it will be fun. Then I have to go get crickets and mouse food at the pet store and come home to mow the pastures and get some clothes on the line. We've had rain every day for the last 4 days but we are supposed to have a break in it. I may run down to Southern States to get some organic fertilizer and try to get the stuff planted in our raised beds tomorrow before it gets too hot. Right now the kids are watching a dinosaur DVD about velociraptors done by the Discovery Channel. It's pretty interesting.

Chad is talking to the Verizon attorney about the things that have been posted on his personal website's forum. She is going to examine everything to determine if they have a case for defamation of character. He said when he left yesterday they stood in front of his car and started taking pictures of him and shouting for him to roll the windows down. He said he put the car in park and just leaned back against the seat until they were done. He contacted all his business partners last night and asked them to please not respond to anything that was posted about the strike in case they do have a case.

He also said that about 15 of his striking coworkers came back to work yesterday and as a result of the strike they have put Chad in charge of all the ordering of materials for the entire states of Virginia and Maryland. I asked him if they were gonna give him a raise and he laughed.

Been there. Done that. Got the t-shirt :p

Sorry Chad is having issues with the strikers. Sounds like he is playing it right. Be calm, take the high road.

We just got home from our day out and the movie was really cute! We all enjoyed it and then I treated the kids to lunch and went to the Dollar Tree and got Maddie a pair of flip flops and a few little things we needed...spent $5. Then went to Home Depot for organic fertilizer, some lime, drain stuff, a box fan for the barn, some Simple Green and spray bottles and I sprung for 2 collapsible metal adjustable sawhorses for hubby's garage.

Gonna do pizza for dinner. I mowed both pastures and the side area around the garden and fruit trees/bushes. Hubby has to finish up the front yard and go down the street to mow a friend's yard for her. She has gout and just can't mow hers anymore. He took her trash to the dump yesterday.

I also went by the post office and sent my brother in Atlanta his favorite hat that had been missing since xmas that we found stuffed inside my son's helmet in granny's basement. I also sent him some of the kids' artwork with it. He's getting ready to go to the Bahamas with his husband soon to visit his mother and he hates it down there. The humidity is horrible for his hair and he fights it the whole time he's there....I know it's vain but he is really touchy about his hair, always has been.

I need to do some laundry but I'm thinking I'll just get up in the morning and do it then. I'm still sore from the chiro and the last thing I need to do is lug wet laundry back and forth to the clothesline. I am thinking I am gonna break out the heating pad for my neck later tonight too....it's really hurting today.

Even though it's not as comforting, you might try icing where it's sore rather than heat. Did your chiro specifically recommend heat? Mine has always told me no heat unless I specifically tell you. Always ice. Freezer pack wrapped in a towel until it's almost numb and then let it warm up again, repeat with the cold. It really doesn't feel as nice as heat or a hot bath when you're actually doing it but I've not failed to feel better afterwards.

I can't believe you actually got a bruise at the chiropractors. Wow. My Doctor is always very quick and gentle. He usually relaxes the muscles either with massage, a massage table or electric stimulation before the adjustment. I always feel sore the first time, but WAY better after each subsequent treatment. He recommends ice as well.

Well, he does the electrocution....I mean electrostimulation stuff first. It is weird cause the first two treatments he did ice on top of the pads for the electro and then the next two he did heat, then switched back to ice. Then he does a massager on my back before the adjustments. He is doing a subluxation on my lower back because of the thinning of the disc between my lumbar 4 and 5 where I had a previous buldging disc. The process of stretching my spine back out is what really hurts. He puts me on the table and raises and lowers my legs while pushing on my vertebrae to stretch me out.

I don't know what happened to get the bruise, usually it is okay but I think I was too far down on the table and when he pushed on my hips it just shoved my inside thigh into the bolts on the side of the table.

I used the heating pad last night on my neck and lower back a bit but I'm still sore today. I just think that it is going to be a long process that is going to be drawn out even more due to the money situation. One visit per week is gonna be rough when i've been used to 2 but hopefully the rehab exercises that we start next week will help out some. I may switch to ice tonight and see if that helps some.

Today I'm doing laundry, I need to change all the sheets on the beds. I ripped our best (800 thread count) sheets last night...rolled over and heard a tear down near the bottom where it was really worn and I had already patched it once. I ignored it and this morning when I rolled over to cut off the alarm my toe went right into the hole and ripped about a foot long tear in the fitted sheet. So it looks like I get to figure out a new way to salvage those sheets. I may use the flat sheet as a quilt backing since it is still good. I may use the fitted sheet as tote bag lining. I refuse to throw it away. It is cream colored so it will go with just about anything.

After I finish one more load of laundry I'm gonna go rip up the remains of my sad raised bed gardens and put some organic fertilizer in the boxes and maybe turn in some straw to fluff it up a bit and plant some fall crops.

The kids asked if they could do "arts and crafts" today so they are engrossed in homemade play doh and cookie cutters right now. I also filled up two spray bottles with water so they could go out and spray each other later when it gets warmer. They had a really good time with it last night....played for over and hour with the spray bottles. Not bad for less than $2 for the bottles. I got good large ones from Home Depot and labeled them with their names and WATER ONLY so they won't get mixed up with any other cleaning supplies. Cheap entertainment is wonderful!

So, I was having a problem getting my son to do his "schoolwork". I sat down with him and told him that if he didn't do his schoolwork in public school or at homeschool with me then mommy would get into trouble. I told him that the police could come and get mommy into trouble for truancy. Now he has convinced himself that I will go to jail if he doesn't do his schoolwork. :hide I did NOT tell him they would put me in jail but any time I mention the police he immediately thinks jail.

He also came to me two nights ago after we put them to bed and said "mommy, I need to tell you something...okay, I said....I just wanted to say thank you for being my mommy cause I only have one mommy and I love you" I just about cried....so sweet. Then he went and said the same thing to Chad. :love

Yeah, things are gonna get crazy....hubby is hearing all kinds of things. They are going after the people that have come back to work even though they were picketing with them last week. He said Fedex has refused to deliver or pick up anything to his area until the strike is over because they were throwing trash at the trucks and blocking them. It is ridiculous. He said yesterday someone shot out a line or something that was connected to a federal building....someone is gonna get fired over that one.
