I usually just soak for an hour or so then I go ahead and drain them well and package them. After the chill days I can then just toss them on into the freezer.

I think if you soak them too long they might get kinda yucky.

Gotcha, you think they will be okay in a pot in the fridge until I can get my bags tomorrow?

Congrats!

I am so interested in raising my own meat birds, but doing the dead does intimidate me...not sure that I am ready to muster up that back bone just yet. Maybe next year :/
It must be nice to raise up your own meat and stock your freezer! :thumbsup

Sounds like you are having a wonderful time filling the freezer for winter! Congratulations on the deer and getting the first of your meaties processed! :thumbsup

Congrats!! There is no better feeling, than knowing you have filled your freezer, with something you raised. I am already planning my spring chickens..and the space for them.

tuesday

Picked out 6 more meaties to do tomorrow, they are in the "death row pen". It is so funny to see the green rectangles in the yard where the tractor first was. Chad told me last night that if we ever do them again he has them all sold to the contractors at work. Oh boy, what have I gotten us into?

Took all the pictures off of our cameras today....over 900 of them. June to Nov. I had to separate them into 4 discs just to have the space to copy them. My next task is to move all of our family photos off of the desktop and onto our external hard drive.

I have to go to an appt tonight but will package and freeze the six we did last night when I get home. Chad has to go to our neighbor's house to help him replace all the wire on his well pump. He hasn't had water for 3 days. His daughter came and watched Tyler for a bit while we did the chickens last night and took a shower before she left.

It is supposed to start raining late tomorrow night so hopefully we'll be able to get the birds done quickly. Our processing station worked pretty well. Chad put shelves on the side and laid a piece of metal pipe across and then we put the feet over it and secured them together with a zip tie so they could bleed out. We hung all six and let them bleed out at the same time. Went really quick. When we need to do a deer we just take the pipe off. It is light enough to lift and move around (with 2 people). We made it all out of scrap 2 x 4s chad got from work. Pretty cool. I'll take a pic when we do the next 6.
