Well we probably could have afforded a place on less land with a more updated house. Our budget was $200,000 and we were going to look at a place on more land with a newer house but mum loved this place.

Both rooms have since been painted ;) Kevin would never put up with pink, his room is now what is called "Celtic Gray" and mine is "Hush Pink"

In Progress Shots

When we moved in we pretty much ripped out everything disgusting so we currently live in a construction site until things get done. First order of business really is the upstairs since Daina and her young daughter Niobi will be coming to stay over the summer. Forgive me for the mess! Nobody cleans on the weekends unless we have company so its kind of a huge mess-ola. Also my brother and I are in different rooms than our normal ones because of painting going on so the sewing room is where my brother is staying and its a mess, and I'm in his room hence the blue walls and flowering bedspread ;)

Front of the house, the porch trim isn't done... we're changing it to something bulkier and the end post has to be replaced as well as the gutters on the porch. All the siding will be done in a couple years, greeny coloured likely, vinyl board and batten on the porch side of the house. The brick side is getting repointed, and that enormous fugly window ripped out and replaced. We currently use the covered porch door as our front door but that porch is getting screened in this summer and our second porch light going up so it can be a screened in, bug free, eating area (my dad has awful allergic reactions to skeeter bites! he swells up huge lol). The door on the brick side will be reinstated, and replaced with a 3/4 glass door with the mullions to match the other door (the other one is a 1/2 glass, 3/4 glass here to act as a big window as well).

Kitchen, as you can see we got the new propane range :D This one is CLEAN and its stainless :D Beautiful. It's a 5 burner with the middle, as I explained to BBH re: plastic utensils, a griddle (there is also a trivet for it to make it a huge burner lol). As I said before, my family has a huge collective hate of oak, which these cabinets are SOLID oak. Hate with a passion. We're looking at hickory cabinets in a barn door style (tongue and groove with the Z brace on the back) and we'll be using restoration hammered hinges which we'll be buying at Legacy, a wonderful store in Cobourg, Ontario that sells restoration and antique hinges, etc. The hinges are hand made in Quebec to order! The cupboards above the window are going and the window is getting enlarged, the cabinets above the stove are going too and we're getting a real nice big range hood, and that cabinet in the far left at the top where its gone is cause of the frozen pipes LOL we pulled apart the kitchen to find where they were freezing. That big cabinet is probably going too and being replaced with more worktop space and an upper cabinet.

Future home of the pantry, we have an under the stairs cabinet we use for dog foods cause its the only one the cat cant get in lol, and theres a microwave set up on the other side which is getting taken out and replaced with a marble counter and open shelving. The microwave is moving into the future Island in the middle of the kitchen! We'll put a light in there and a door over the opening too. See that tea towel hanging up? I was super unthrilled because Costco had these ones with chickens on them that had all the names of breeds and the chicken and stuff but they sold out and never carried them again! :( so we got the apple ones instead lol.

pantry.jpg

Living room.. yeah what can we say about this LOL. Where the TV is is where our woodburner will be going, on the other side of that is an old bricked up window opening but the big header is still in there so we're putting it there. It'll be styled, hopefully, after the inglenook style (obviously a false one). If you don't know what that is, google it :) We even have some old barn beams from the driveshed to use as a mantel.

I didn't provide befores of the downstairs full bath, but here is a glimpse at the shower... eek is right!

shower.jpg

My room, the colour is a Behr colour and its called "Hush Pink" and in the mornings it looks cream with the morning light on it, and in the evenings sort of a ballet dancer pink. Beautiful! I only have a photo of the alcove, it was "created" when the old owners put a bathroom essentially IN my room lol. I made the desk.

alcove_desk_stephanie.jpg

I'll update with photos of what gets done when it gets done. Likely the first set of photos to come will be of the painted and trimmed out hallway, then the hardwood flooring, etc etc.

By the way, is anyone going to be seeing the new Alice and Wonderland movie? I'm in love with the Avril Lavigne song for it, called Alice. It looks fantastic, the movie itself. Right now though I'm super annoyed that I have to wait so darn long for the next Vampire Diaries episode -_-

I love a girl with VISION!! Glad that I could provide you with some little inspiration. :)

I am so sorry to break this to you but your BEFORE pictures are beautiful compared to my BEFORE pics. I wish OH I wish I had a scanner so that I could show you. :sick

I do see the things that need updating in your pics and love :love your visionary ideas, but fail to see any green velvet wallpaper in your pics. There is also no brown PLYWOOD cabinets with chipped paint and loose hinges that fall off when you open the door. My house did not come with a greasy blow up stove like yours did... It had no stove at all. We only had a spewing dishwasher and a homemade chicken coop of an air conditioner complete with a "Y" breaker switch compliments of Frankenstein. :th

I do have a similar bathroom to the one that you took a photo of. Mine still has white tile with green flowers in the middle of each! The vinyl screwed to the wall covers the fallen tiles and the holes in the wall!
Bathroom%20tile%20composit.jpg

Now just picture (if you can) this tiny room with all walls and ceiling painted olive green to match the flower. Then add cherry stained sink cabinet and burnt orange trim around EACH pane of glass in the window and stir. We painted things white for now. Someday I will be gutting THAT atrocity as well. :D

Best of all YOUR homestead is a homestead. You have a barn and space for your animals. Mine is on a tiny lot in a big stinky city.

I think your house will turn out FANTASTIC!!! You simply MUST keep us posted with those pics. I LOVE it! You are an inspiration for me as well.

LOL don't worry, the bathroom does get worse. The tub surround is lime green (and falling off), the vanity is white plastic with a lovely (not) 70s black marble/marblite sink/counter combo. The toilet is falling into the floor, and its on an angle because the floor is rotted there (not bad, though its getting replaced obviously) so you have to sit on an angle to pee. And across from the shower/tub is a great big wall of orange 70s pine panelling with a LOVELY "false petina" mirror tiled mirror on the top portion and some striking brass towel rails LOL.

It also seems that there was a squirrel family living behind the vanity, not rats, squirrels (though there were squirrels living in the chicken coop too....with snakes living above them.....)

The living room looks like drywall right? Its not... its 1/4" plywood panels painted hospital cream with the original horsehair lathe and plaster crumbling behind it (random chunks of plaster occasionally fall out from under the wall lol) and we have some very dodgy looking conduit electrics in the living room.

Bathroom has an exhaust fan that looks like it could be a plane propellor with a dodgy looking/non-working switch to operate it that appears to come out of nowhere LOL.

The barn... well... I don't even know what to say about the barn hahaha, mum fell through the floor in the hayloft last time we were up there cleaning out the rotting hay, it was only her fat that saved her.

;) We did find some photos of children probably from the 40s stuffed in the wall when we replaced our front door, which by the way, had no header at all. Still doesn't, lol because it was winter when we replaced it so we just shoved it in and hoped for the best. The new header will be in this spring.

And the stove indeed had a thick layer of encrusted grease, as did everything else in the kitchen, but if you ever met the man who owned the place before Jim the farmer you wouldn't at all be shocked. He himself is kind of greasy too ;)

We had two tone orange shag carpeting in our last houses' family room lol. It was laid over concrete and had no underpad! I tore that bad boy out in strips by myself at 16 (my dad is too lazy to help lol) and laid the whole room in nice lowpile carpet tile in a neutral colour. Worked out great with our messy family.

:yuckyuck

Oh yes SHAG. We had some of that in the bedrooms!

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you! We had a squirrel build a nest on the top of our basement wall, but the kicker here is ... she was a pet squirrel! :gig

Her name was Squee and she was rescued as a pinky from a fall out of her nest. We had her for many years. She could not be released because she was pretty sure she was a cat and used to play with ours.

As for the nest. We had a box full of old magazines destined for the recycle bin that she discovered one day. She would race across our basement family room, get in the box, retrieve a sheet of paper and then had a long VERY complicated route to get to her "nest area". Her route included a journey on the exercise bike, several chair tops and the grand finale included a leap onto the brim of a very LARGE Mexican sombrero that hung on the wall. She would race around the brim of the hat until she got enough momentum and the she would leap up into a loose ceiling tile and add to the nest. It was so funny to watch we just let her keep on building!

I LOVE your kitchen, and love the cabinets...maybe just painting them out a colour if you all don't like oak...like a nice vanilla colour. They would look wonderful with some antiquing added on top of the vanilla base (just take some dark walnut stain and wipe it in the crevices) I would LOVE to work on that kitchen! It has so much cupboard space and the cupboards actually look to be in very good condition. Add a big island where that ironing board is and voila...beautiful!

Unfortunately none of the cupboards are in very good condition once you open them up! Its really sad because 20 years ago it was a custom oak kitchen (hate oak, but I recognize quality when I see it and these are quality!). They're all full of grease that we can't for the life of us get out, missing shelves, and the ones around the sink are all moldy. We're going probably with an old fashioned tongue and groove/shaker cabinet in a cream. We can get reproduction strap hinges for them too. On the main counters we're doing white Quartz counters with a subway tile backsplash (not sure if we're doing marble or ceramic subway tiles). The island may end up being a darker colour on the cabinets, maybe a chocolate or something like that with a slab carrera (very little vein, there is another one that is just like carerra but it has minimal veining... i just dont remember the name!) marble counter. We're doing marble counters in the pantry and marble shelves. Nice big deep french country sink. Not sure on the floor yet, maybe cork if we can get it for a reasonable price, or if we can find linoleum but there is also the option of that flexible laminate that sticks to itself, it comes in a cork pattern and its hard wearing enough for the dogs. We're having a nice harvest style table built for the dining room (its a dine in kitchen).

Anddd... I found a photo of the upstairs bathroom! It has a mosaic tile floor. We need to get a stained glass window made for that opening there as it opens onto my room. Yes, I could watch someone peeing... not that I would.... but I could LOL on the other side of the window is my desk/alcove area.

And these are the hardwood flooring samples we looked at yesterday. We brought these home, the first one is an Oak called Bourbon, we hate oak but this one is actually alright. The second one is the Birch, which is the one we are probably going to get, and the third is hickory which we love but we're not sure if we're doing hickory cabinets downstairs so it'd be a bit much. The birch has a lot of variation between planks and it looks like it fits in with the age of the house. Can't wait! Its solid hardwood flooring, from Monaghan Lumber in Peterborough and its allllll canadian made.

All the wood samples look very nice. I have to say I like the hickory best. But any choice would be a very nice choice. That is too bad that people didn't take care of those cabinets in the kitchen. I know you don't like oak but it is a shame to have good cabinets not be taken care of.
