As a note, Accio is only 3 years old. I'm hoping its just the chronic condition which is easy to keep under control. The vet mentioned if it is the chronic condition we may have to add some sort of vitamin supplement to his diet, but thats not a big deal. We were hoping for stones, at least he could go on a special food to dissolve them and worst case have surgery to remove them. But alas, not so lucky.

We have to be ready to do whats right and have him euthanized. I don't want my cat to suffer, no matter how much I love him and I trust my vet to tell me if it is worth keeping him in pain so I can have my pet. Right now he is enjoying the good life relaxing upstairs on the bed.

Male cats with this problem are frustrating and i'm sure they feel grouchy. Not familiar with the brand of food- keep trying what the vet recommends, may need to try several. Not cheap.'

One thing I didn't see mentioned is to try to get him to drink more water. Around the house does he have several places to get water? Sometimes they need a bowl of water where no other animal can bother them- don't know in your case if there are other cats/dogs that stress him. Some cats like water with ice cubes or even chicken broth or clam juice- warmed helps. Would ask the vet though to make sure it isn't against their diet.

Prayers for a speedy recovery.

Accio is a good drinker, we have an auto waterer that filters the water for the dogs and he drinks out of that. He also drinks from the toilet -_- I caught him doing that this morning actually. He also has a bowl of water in the room he's in solitary confinement in. Its not stress, he's lived with the dogs his whole life and loves them to pieces. He even sleeps with them in their crates!

Royal Canin is a high quality, very expensive, food that is supported by the CKC and the vet community here. They also make a version for vets that comes in special formulations. Its not food related at all, but the vet said keep him on the good food as he is doing well on it. We switched him to the Royal Canin 4 months ago when he had some pinkish urine. He didn't have a urinanalysis at the time because the vet couldn't get anything from him. We did have a urinanalysis done this time and came back as crystal free, plus the x-ray which determined he didn't have any stones.

Wish you could have gotten better answers, but at least you know what it isn't. Hope Accio feels better soon and that the antibiotics do the trick.

The vet then suggested perhaps it could be stones, so we did an x-ray which revealed not a single stone..... chronic urinary inflammation combined with a urinary infection (in this instance he would have had an infection that keeps getting irritating by urine which makes it bleed). He was sent him having been given an anti-inflammatory, and a 3 day course of anti-inflammatories.....may have to look at having him ultrasounded and investigate the possibility of a mass. In which case it may be kinder to him to just have him euthanized.
yikes! before you go that route... what you are describing is exactly what we went thru with one of our boys... its classified as inflammation without any kinda of reason (sure there is a medical term).

my vet has been seeing a lot of this - not food related, no crystals, no mass, and responds to anti inflamatories/antibiotics. she said they dont know why but it acts like a virus (that causes the inflammation) but it doesnt follow the "normal" treatments like you would give a blocked male with crystals.

she gave us feline cosequine for 30 days, 1 capsule daily. it works like a dream. we havent had a reoccurred and everything is tip top. you can buy cosequine over the counter or online...really this works.

we also switched to canned food. one of our gals is a fussy eater so we give her tuna as a treat and add more water. she drinks all the water and leaves the tuna (cats!).

good luck!

Yeah the vet had mentioned that vets don't know *why* this happens, but that they know it does. She goes "we don't know why it happens, which is why we gave it a crazy long name" haha. He was given an injectable antibiotic that will work for 2 weeks. She said we should notice some change with the daily anti-inflammatory and the antibiotics in about 5 days. At the end of 10 days he should not be peeing blood anymore. This seems to be somewhat in line with what happened in November when he had pinkish tinted blood. The vet (the vet we saw today's husband, its a significantly sized practice lol.. our goat vet is there too, and her husband does my horse vaccines) gave him at the time the same antibiotic and anti inflammatory and with a food change he was okay in about a week.

Accio will eat anything in sight. That cat is like a waste disposal unit LOL. He actually even gained 1lb between his last visit and this visit! We recently reduced how much of the Royal Canin he gets, the bag says he should be eating 1 cup a day but he only really needs 1/2 cup. He's 13.6lbs! And he started out so tiny, he was half the size of a normal kitten when I got him and he had to have his manly bits hacked off a bit later because he was too small.

I just checked his litterbox a while ago and he did a small pee with a small amount of blood in it. The vet said what concerned her was that he peed A LOT of blood. Probably about a teaspoon full of blood, no urine, just the blood.

ETA, I can't get any cat antibiotics over the counter here. I'd have to drive to the US and buy from a store. Andddd with the bill for the vet I can't afford to get my passport this month unfortunately. It came out to $345.00 after we left, and he has to go back in 10 days for a check up.

no worries.. the cosequine ISNT a prescribed drug... its not an antibiotic. check the vet sites up there.. its even available at amazon for under $30.

the way my vet explained it.. its kinda like when women have 'non specific inflammation' in their womanly parts. for whatever reason the cosequine targets these cells and takes away the inflammation... i know i know.. not a good scientific explanation but weirder things have happened.

and sometimes cats just get a cystitis for no good reason that we can tell. for instance, if there is a new cat around, the weather changes, if you are tense... or whatever nonspecific reason - like you moved a pillow on the couch or rearranged where you hang your jacket. i mean they are cats - who knows why they do what they do... probably just to torment us....

Well I'll look around and talk to the vet in 10 days, but we don't have any supply type stores really or catelogs.

Poor little dude is just sleeping upstairs right now. Usually he wants to run around at the vets office but he just flopped down on the towel the vet put down for him and sat there purring lol.

Plus on top of everything my silly (or stupid, whatever you decide to chose) brother was asked/told to water the horses. All he had to do was run the hose for Mylie's bucket and take 2.5 buckets of water to Luna's water bucket and he did nothing. I came home to two completely dry horse pails. Not a happy me, I filled up Mylie's and threw a bucket of water into Luna's which I'll have to finish filling when I do hay in a couple hours. Poor horsies.

Well I just let Accio out of solitary confinement (the dogs have gone to bed) and he's a lot more active than he was earlier. Seems to be feeling a little better, has been bouncin' off the walls and purring like a mad purring machine. He purrs as loud as two tanks. Mum said when I left to go down and water Luna, Accio was running around meowing all sad like. He's been really sucky and happy too, and just now he was playing with his glow in the dark ball.

I'm hoping things clear up and it is just a case of UTI + Chronic Urinary Inflammation.

And a cool little story to make this day at least a little fun..

You all know who Eric Lamaze is right? I know Pat does, and Miss_thenorth, how can you not?! And of course Hwillm! Anyway, my riding coach/trainer (Daina, who is training Mylie this summer) lives in Alberta and trains a lot of horses. She's super talented and all her horses turn out amazing. Right now she's training Hano X's for resale for a lady out west. She was at the gas station on the way home from training pumping gas (she lives about 10 minutes from Spruce Meadows) and this car showed up and stopped behind her and the guy got out and started pumping gas. He was wearing beat up riding boots, and worn out riding pants like he'd been doing a lot of riding and they got to talking about horses and training and how overwhelming its been, ect. Before the guy left he gave her his number and said to call if she wanted to grab a coffee and talk horses. The other night she was thinking about Mylie and some other training horses and decided to give him a call to talk about it. No one answered but the machine picked up and it was ERIC LAMAZES NUMBER! Daina isn't super observant when it comes to people, she's met Ian Millar a few times (he trained a horse I used to ride, and was good friends with the owner of the barn I first rode at) so she didn't recognize him and she's a dressage rider so show jumping and all that isn't her thing really. She said she almost had a heart attack and was barely able to leave a message!

How cool is that?!

I hope your cat gets better. I wonder if there are some herbs that could help keep that UTI at bay. Obviously you need to follow through with the current treatment but maybe there would be something once it is taken care of that you could use.
