Hijack time. On a recent trip home I lost my wallet with all my credit cards and my ID. I have spent the last two weeks monitoring the accounts and trying to get the ID and cards replaced. I picked up these cards while still drawing a fat check from the corporation that I used to work for. I am 68 now and have no regular source of income. Well several places refused to issue cards due to that fact. While I am very much SS I spent much more time stashing cash than canning or freezing my garden produce. I own three homes and several small (5 acres and below) empty land plots. With the current housing mess none of these are going to be easy to turn into liquid cash at the moment.
I also have a broker account where I bought a lot of Stocks and Bonds when prices were down. I saw that the broker firm was offering free debit and credit cards tied to your account. Aha that is where I will get the cards I need (old man hate to have to carry much cash usually around $100 dolars for tips and if I get robbed I hope the the money will be enough so I don't get beat up because of disappointment)
Well the broker asked all the standard questions about sources of income etc and Said I'm afraid that I can't issue you a card. I looked him dead in the eye and said you must be kidding. You are holding better than $600 grand of my money and I can't be trusted? Say it again, you aren't the only broker in this town and I can move all my holdings within a week! I have only made one withdrawal (to buy my present home) and since I quit having corporate income I have deposited thousands here. I parked next to your new car, mine is the 6 year old truck. If I add up all the commissions I paid for your car. There is a famous quote in the brokerage business the punch line is "Where are the customers yachts? Are you telling me that you want to give up my business over a card that is supposed to be tied to my account? If I fail to have income it is because of your performance. I made better than 2 grand in dividends this month. Etc. (I get long winded when I am mad!) People get in a mindset about things like regular income and appearance. Yep I dress like an old dirt farmer because I dont need to impress anyone. Thanks for letting me vent.
