Had eggs and oatmeal for a late breakfast. Still hungry so gonna go eat an avocado. My son just offered me a bowl of canned pineapple. Sweet thing. He forgot that pineapple burns my mouth.

Hmmm... avocado. Hope it's still good. Healthy fats rule!

ETA: Avocado was bad. I hate that! So ... heated some leftover ground beef from last night's dinner, added some salsa, swiss cheese and cream cheese. Yummy!

Busy day. Was planning to go meet our service puppy who's 6 weeks old but 5 minutes before we were planning to leave, Hubby got a call from his sis. Father is dying and might not make it back to Colorado so Hubby was needed 2 states away. Change of plans. Hurredly packed clothes and food for 2 days and took off. His last text tonight was how he really appreciated me and my son in his life. His sis and her husband must already be driving him crazy.

Instead of meeting the puppy (my car wasn't gonna make it that far), the Kid and I headed into town, had lunch out (he tried 2 new things ... major milestone!), frozen yogurt (ouch to the yogurt), then shopping at Wally World. It was a pretty decent day.

He was disappointed that we won't be able to meet his puppy for another week, but I bribed him with that frozen yogurt and a new $12 lego set.

Came home and found some corn and winter squash has popped up! Woohoo! Better nate than lever!

Huge storm yesterday. Large freaking drops but luckily no hail. Just checked outside after feeding livestock and no damage that I could see. Even a few more seeds have sprouted. If Hubby hadn't had to leave town in a hurry, we were planning on planting the sunflower/cucumber/melon beds (I call it the 3-cousins!). Maybe I'll do that tomorrow morning.

We don't eat many pickles any more but I'm planting lots of cucumbers. Some bush varieties have already sprouted (yes, I'm late). Looks like I'm gonna have lots of cukes. Don't want to make many pickles so thinking about dehydrating. I could powder the dried cukes and use to make a special cucumber dip that I love ... cuke, onion, cream cheese (or farmer's cheese) and a little mayo. Anyone dehydrated cucumbers before?

My berries keep disappearing. The chickens aren't getting to them so it has to be the rabbits, chipmunks, or wild birds. Bought some tulle yesterday so I'm going to cover the plants in the next day or two. Gotta. I have a batch of blueberries that will be turning blue any day now.

Son is doing well. Had a wonderful day (in parts) yesterday: tried two new foods, and worked on building a bookcase from a box. Assembling. Didn't want any help, except when he got stuck. He had a piece on backwards. I pointed it out, he re-consulted his instructions, changed it, then came in to give me a big hug as a thanks. His bad days outnumber the good days so I'm thankful for any good moment he has.

Woke up with a migraine. Again. They are debilitating. Already muddled through feeding the critters so I'm going back to bed for a while.

I have never tried dehydrating cucumbers. sounds interesting though. Sometimes I make salsa out of cucumbers. It's yummy.

We got the hail over in Security. My plants look pathetic. Hopefully they will recover.

If you get over run with cukes let me know. Maybe we can do some swapping :D

WZ: Deal on the swap. Want to meet you sometime anyway! You seem like a neat person.

Not much on salsa but I do plan to try dehydrating.

Geez, counting my cucumbers before they hatch. Er, grow.

Hubby called. He's having a hard time out there. Turns out his dad is a hoarder, and there is a ton of trash to get rid of. Hubby's disheartened. I'm a packrat but ... I can't imagine.

Just huge raindrops here. We had two short storms. One right before sunset and fireworks. One after the shows had ended. So good timing !!!

Neener neener Auntie! I get to meet her before you do!!!

I've got a large group of chickens in a 6x10 dog kennel in my goat pen. I let them out in the afternoon, and come mid-August, 15 of them will be going to freezer camp. That'll leave about 10-15 in there. I have 2 adults in this group, and 3 just starting to lay with another 10 that'll be laying in another month or two.

Right now, the eggs I'm getting are on the floor! They won't use the laying area I've always had available (you'd think the older ones would remember).

So ... I gotta tear down what I threw together in there and build them a proper coop. Somewhere where the nesting boxes are higher up. I have materials but my hands don't grip and when Hubby gets back into town, he'll have a LOT to do.

Wondering if anyone here in the rural east-of-Denver area can help me build? Needs to be done inside the chicken coop because the doorway is only 2 feet side.

Let me know. Barter?

Oh My Gosh! Can't believe this! I just got an e-mail from the non-profit that's collecting donations for my son's service dog. Enough donations have been made to pay the purchase price of the puppy! Woohoo! I was really worried about where we were going to come up with it when we pick Krypto up in 2 weeks. Whew! Now we need to raise the largest portion ... the training, supplies and certifications. So still need recipes for the cookbook ... but WOW! I'm really amazed at all of the awesome people who have come through.

So ... who's gonna come help me build a quick chicken coop? 4 foot tall, 3 feet wide, 2 feet deep, with two rows of nest boxes at the top. Huh Huh Huh? I have the woooodddd **sing-song**

I'll throw in some goat milk as a thank you. And maybe a silkie chicken?

Awesome news on the dog! As for the coop, I would have to bring Max with me, which means I would have to rebuild your house after building the coop! :p
