Wifezilla, bring one of the ducks inside, and let it sit on your couch. after a few minutes, it will have crapped all over your furniture, and you will not be thinking about how cute they are... also, you will be eating them with a smile, and cursing them every time you set foot in the stinky livingroom.

Wasn't it last year that Becca and I butchered our first meaties??? We were squeamish about it at first, too, but once you get that first head off - piece o' cake!

I mean, seriously. I had a chicken-murdering-adrenaline rush and well, you know I love chicken!

yep - fried, baked, skinned, deboned, slow cooked, marinated - golly gosh I love chicken!

So, just think - apple stuffed duck slow roasted and yumm-o in your tummy!

I had no idea the forum was populated by out of work comedians :gig

Ok, so one is draining in the killing cone right now. I learned 2 things.

1) My knife sucks
2) Since ducks don't like bleeding to death, they will thrash their heads around and splatter everything with blood.

So now I am off to rinse off the shed *** Hey Wifezilla, you might need a back splash would have been a good thing to say ***

I have read several places, where it has been determined that using the broom method to kill first, works better with ducks and geese.
:idunno Might be something less messy to try.

ETA Oh,and cut out rather then in. You will have an easier time that way :hugs

WZ, you are a better "big girl" than I am- or probably could be! Good for you for taking the plunge. As much as I absolutely LOVE duck in any dish (peking duck is to die for!) I could never raise them and butcher them. For some reason I do think I could hunt them and butcher them out with much much less problem. The having raised them and know them would get to me.

Congratulations on duck in your freezer!! Good for you!

Not in the freezer yet. Actually the duck carcass is in the fridge in a sea salt & water brine.

It was the smallest of the 3 drakes and part indian runner so there isn't a lot of meat...but meat is meat and there are bones in there for broth too :D

And a heart...and a liver. Mmmmm

So yeah..it was a little gruesome, but not horrible. I can do it again..after I get a better knife.

So I did end up skinning just because Max was hogging the kitchen and I couldn't get a pot of water on. I managed to cover myself in feathers. As I was starting to butcher him out on the picnic table and noticed the "keeper" ducks could still see me. So I had to scootch it over a little further so they couldn't see :D

Then the cat walks outside to see what is going on and he got spooked! I swear he was thinking "boy what did that duck do to piss her off? I do not want to be near her if she is in that bad of a mood!"
