At my house I would have to add:

* Chickens have been greased.

.... Cause I always put Vaseline on their combs when the temps are supposed to drop into the single digits!

perfect!! we need to do that for our #1 Rooster, Fred. his poor comb really takes a beating. will add to the list!

the only one i'm really worried about it poor Runner, our little featherless turkey hen. she's ok as long as she is sitting under the heat lamp but if we get that cold and no electric... ugh. grow feathers, grow!!!

thanks for the reminder to grease the chickens. wow. um....that could be said in a way that would really be inappropriate! hee hee hee

hee hee hee snicker snicker snicker...... for heavens sakes i think i've reverted back to 4th grade. hee hee hee quick pull my finger! hee hee hee hee

ahem. anyway

i know!!! what is with you guys and the cold?!??!?!? golly. so far so good for us.

but wow i was so mad - i was so tired from all the pork processing last nite that i went to bed at 9pm! my hubby tried to get me to take a shower in case the power went off but i was to tired.. so i left a huge pile of dishes in the sink and crashed without the shower.

so JUST before the heat came on.. poof. power out. dang. i laid there wondering just how i was going to get the water hot enough for my french press....grrrr.

but then after a while it all came back on! so we are heating up the house, doing ALL the dishes, and getting everything set. we can keep the house warm with the wood burning stove so we wont be hurting. my hubby keeps telling me that Runner will be nice and warm in a pot of warm water simmering away. auaughghhghghhhhh!! after all this is she going to live, darn it!!!

which reminds me that we need to go and band our turkey mommas.... i keep laughing about poor BR and the whoops! was that one of our mommas?!?!?? hee hee hee hee

Good luck wiht the cold and the power.....it sounds like you are well prepared!

We are unusually cold here this week...in the mid 50s during the day. Brrrrr.....I must have really thin blood because when you all talk about temps below 30* I shiver!

I can handle the cold, it's the rain and mud that drives me crazy! All my Brahmas need muck boots :gig I hate running the dryer too....if it is 40 or above the clothes go on the line. But with all the rain the yard under the clothes line is a mud pit. No point in getting them dirty when I just washed them!

Today the temp is a balmy 11 degrees and slated to go lower tonight. My, my I do love Missouri.

We also have an ice layer covered with a powder snow layer and more supposed to be coming in the next few days. I REALLY don't like it when they use the word "frigid" in the weather report. :tongue

OFG,
I'll tell you how to keep the power on......... buy a generator.

Where we live the power used to go out if the sun was shinning to bright, the wind was blowing, the wind wasn't blowing. You get the idea. We had a generator anyway since we live in one of the hurricaine ground areas but it was in the barn. A pain to drag it out, fire it up and wire it in. sooooooooo I built a small generator shed right beside the meter base, put a plug on the bottom of the meter base. When the power goes out just open the door, start the gen and plug it in, 5 minutes tops.

Now our power never goes out, how does it know?????
When you hang laundry out and not a cloud in the sky, 30 minutes later monsoon. hows does it know?????
You have a couple days off and nothing to do but relax and a tree falls on part of the barn. how does it know????
