holy turkey! they are EARLY! yikes!

guess what i found this morning... 3 days early.. i dont think i can count correctly.. um.. now we have to find somewhere for these jakes. the momma is in a brooder that we can lock but not enough room for the little ones to run around.

Turkey poults are cute.
When I see the wild turkeys they always have a communal nursery thing going. That made me think that turkeys were better with each others offspring than chickens and that they didn't kill someone elses babies. Am I wrong?

from what i've read the other turkeys (hens and toms/jakes) may try and kill the babies.. so we are 'better safe than sorry' and keep them separated.

however,

Runner, our BR hen who is raising chicken chicks, just beat the tar out of one of our roosters AND one of the guineas... so i can't imagine the turk hens would let anyone at their babies. but then again, they are big goofy birds and getting stepped on could be an issue.

the 2nd hen doesnt have any hatched but frankly i dont think she knows what she is doing so it may be a no go. in that case Turkey Momma will get her brooder+nursery and we'll have our space problems solved. so we'll see

in the meantime is Meat Monday.. thats right. them creepy meat chickens are coming to dinner.

and our neighbor's cow calved. i got there just after the big event.

WOW what a day!

Oh wow! I was driving down the road to the farm yesterday and saw a mama with about 9 or 10 brand new babies.....looked just like yours........under a tree in someone's front yard. I want to do turkeys eventually but hubby says "no more species". Think I could sneak them in the chicken coop or the duck house??? :p

you know, for our money the turkeys are such a better pay off then the chickens...

and the babies are cuter!

Tilda the wild turkey is out there right by the house! i think she is just days away from joining our merry band. whoot!

where do i even start....

wow what a week!

the good news is that we have even more turkey babies... they still arent due until tomorrow but we have at least 6 up popping around. also, Tilda the wild turkey was IN the turkey yard yesterday with the rest of the crew! hopefully she will stick around. she skulked off last nite so she didnt roost with them..but i hope she does.

then

two mornings ago i had to run thru the woods chasing off that fox. in my socks. it isnt even a Dr Seuss rhyme. then we found the sad feathers of one of the guineas.

then

we dressed all our meats and they tasted just like chicken! we had a spectacular roaster - at least 10 pounds, dressed! i cant say i was wow'd like i was with the BR turkeys vs the BBW's.. but it was chickeny and delicious for sure. and they arent nearly as gross in the fridge as they were outside.

then

yesterday the guineas started screaming. again. but it was their "hey its a fox" scream and then.... only two came running out of the woods. i sent the dog into the bramble but by that time we heard the hen of the other pair WAY over there.. like.. far far away. and she didnt come home last nite. we think she is a gonner.
:-(

so now i'm totally hacked off at the foxy brown.... one guinea was a favor.. now i'm just plain mad.

and then

both my lady geese are setting! i'm so relieved b/c OD and Penny (the older pair) were always standing over by the baby ducks, looking at them lovingly - or like they were going to commit ducklingnapping... so whew. now they can have their own babies.

and THEN

Miss Dash finally just gave up her nest last nite. i was relieved as she was over due and it just wasnt working. at all. and she looks horrible so i'm about to go and get her up and take her down to the pond. she roosted with the other lady ducks last nite and took as much of a bath as she could.... in a bucket in a mud puddle. sheesh she just looked worse! so i made it "rain" on her with the hose. i'm not sure if she like it or not.

and FINALLY

those stupid goats got thru a gate and totally demolished two of my fruit trees
:-(

and its hotter than blazes so i've been up for a while and need to get moving. because while all these shenanigans have been going on i've been planting everything i can!

happy thursday!
:)
