Hey Biblio - maybe you should get a whole herd of goats and lease them out to eat kudzu (or PI) - another great idea for your sustainable farm!

Biblio, let's take a road trip in your Dad's car to Many-Snow-Ta to buy Blackbird's bucklings. They'll ride good in the back, kinda like 2 geese.

it's a really, really good idea. the city of Chattanooga has a patrol of goats and llamas for EXACTLY that purpose...

unless you have those magical bucks that provide milk, i'm gonna have to pass. otherwise, Karen (kcsunshine) and i are on our way. we can total fit 3 goats in a Honda Element!

i had a GREAT visit with my pal - and she was a great sport. not only did she wear shoes AND sox... but she also put on the XXL tshirt i gave her to cover up her pretty clothes. and she held the babies (ducklings and chicks) but i couldnt convince her to give the goats a squeeze.

and no she didnt climb up into the milk stand like the "bucket list lady"

ha!

but she observed us doing the chores, OD didnt kill her, and of course she loved all the inside cats.

but best of all.... as "prissy" (and i mean that in the best way) as she was - she totally raved about the food. almost everything we had came from the yard and she wasnt grossed out at all. she tried the goat milk and cheese (loved it!), and ate the pork chops, and the fresh butter i shook the day before. so i was really, really glad.

and we had fun girl time
:)

and her kids drew me pictures so i loved that. yay! but now back to real life. at least the house is clean! one great benefit of having company is that we actually look around and decide we need to shovel out the house.

i'm still under the weather so i'm hanging out on the couch today. i figure i'm going to do my fall garden planning so at least there is that. we have horrible heat/humidity so i'm trying not to get over stressed.

but at least once an hour or two, one or both of us, go out and do the rounds- checking to make sure everyone has fresh cold water, plenty of shade, and keeping the fans going. yesterday i put a cold, metal bucket of water in front of one of the fans to get a little bit of a 'swamp cooler' going for my setting hen. she hasnt taken any water that i know of so i'm really worried about her. but my littlest chicks are doing great. the momma still doesnt want to take them outside so she's still in the brooder. i know she needs a dust bath and something green to eat so i'm hoping she'll take them out tomorrow. i'll get her some weeds later.

in all this heat we also make sure that everyone is calm - so we give them as much room as possible. giving the poultry the best tools and then letting them be is our strategy for dealing with the heat.

happy saturday!

Sounds like you had a nice time. :)

I've got two teacher friends from TX coming up tomorrow for a few days. I have been cleaning/painting/fixing like a fiend too.

Still sick? What gives?
