OFG I a glad you were able to help the neighbor with her goat. Such a sad thing but it had to be done. My SIL had a Lab run under a moving trailer on her ranch the other day. They had to put it down. Such a sad thing.

Not to seem insensitive but what type of gun did you have. We have bought a rifle and a shotgun but both seem like a bit to big for that type of job.

About your complaining friends.... I learned a new phrase this morning. "Find the treasure in every trial." Maybe you could use it on them.

Your peaches sound heavenly.

I am actually at the point that I tell people that they could never handle what I do. Then I go through what my day is like. They then agree. End of story. There are very few people who think my "being at home all the time" is easy.

I'm glad you were able to help the neighbors. That is never the easy part but has to be done.

In my life time I have been actually nipped by a Dachshund, two Chihuahuas and a Shih Tzu. I've seen biters that were anything from Poodles to Golden Retrievers. The nasty two dogs at the vet's office where I worked were both Bassett Hounds. We were terrified of those two dogs. In the three years I was there I don't remember ever being overly concerned about any Pit Bull, Doberman or Rottweiler that we saw. Normally cautious-yes, but flat out frightened like we were of the Bassetts? Nope.

OFG-You're the kind of neighbor we all need!

H23 - i have the funniest vision of you all huddled together screaming while that low-rider snarled at you all.... ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

i'm not laughing AT you ... of course. but could basset hounds actually move fast enough to get any of you??
;-)
(just kiddin)

Dog #1 who looks like a white wolf, has a deep throated growl, and tips the scale at over 100lbs is scared to death of the vet. i swear he almost peed his pants one time. the dog - not the vet... altho the vet tend to give him a wide berth. i tell the vet that i'll hold "the pointy ends" generally while Dog#1 is hiding behind me. but he is so well behaved that everyone oooh's and aaah's wherever we go. i'm not sure if its b/c we use hand signals or if other people's dogs are just so ill behaved.. but i just love showing him off, knowing that he's such a good dog.

K - i think most folks still think i sit on the deck and watch chickens all day. sigh.

tanks - i dont think you are being insensitive at all. i wasnt sure how much detail to provide - but we've had so many losses around here on the SS board i thought it might help to explain what we did. you never know when you are going to be in that situation.

we used a .22 revolver. if we had a .22 rifle we could have used that. and you are right, anything bigger may have just been ugly - if you know what i mean. but this was very clean, very little blood, and was effective with only one shot. she couldnt even lift her head which made it easier. we laid her out so she couldnt really see the gun or what we were doing. we wrapped/put her in the feed bags because she was so messy (she had the runs bad), so she was easier to carry, and so she wouldnt panic (being snuggled in calms most animals). really the whole thing happened very smoothly.

it also helped that we were not upset and moved quietly. the oldest kid was there and we just had him stay back a bit. i think if the other kids were there (and the mom) there would have been more tension and crying.

its always something.

but wouldnt it be cool if we all lived near each other? ha! we could start our own brand of Amish... the shorts and tshirt wearing, drinkin' tequila, and swearin' like a sailor Amish, that is. but we could still quote scripture and work hard.

Thanks for splanin!! I think that's what I need is just a small 22 handgun. Since the ammo is interchangeable that would make sense.

I was thinking the same thing about all of us living near each other. But I think we would need like a 40 acre minimum per family and good fences. That way we can be close enough to help but still have our own space. :p

Amen sister!

I saw a group of Amish at Whole Foods last night. It was odd. I don't usually see them that far into town. I felt like I didn't have enough clothes on :p
