Ummmm.......you already ARE one of "those" people! Not "them" specifically, but "those," certainly. Ask any of your neighbors. Or maybe I will. Yoo-hoo!!!

Speaking of 'maters, it still IS a bad day.

Goats are evil. :somad Shoot, that smilie reminds me that we won't have homemade hot chili. :hit

ok fine

WE ARE GETTING MORE CREEPY MEAT!

its true. i ordered 25 cornish x's from meyer. we are getting more meat chickens.

ugh

remember all the complaining and moaning? we'll, in a week and a day its gonna start all over again.

sheesh!

here's what happened. our turkey year was a DISASTER. we basically have 2 whole poults to show for ourselves. and they arent the greatest. between our hens making nests in the weeds, that stupid fox, and all kinds of other chaos... ugh...

turkeys = F-

we tried to eek out one last hatch and wow it didnt work at all. so.... we decided we needed to do something fast. sure we have chickens galore - but only 5 of the roosters are ready right now. and we either have to do something - or look forward to a winter of eating old hen (which isnt bad btw).

after we talked to an old timer down at the feedmill, and the gals who worked there, and based on Bourbon Red's turkey-not-success.. well it just seems this is NOT the year of the turkey. there doesnt seem t be a lot of turkey success out there. and a wise man said that the ancient almanac said it is the Year of the Duck (anybody want ducks??).

so we just figured we'd go with what worked and get it over with.

so we ordered them. $43 for 25 chicks, including shipping. so you cant hardly beat that with a stick.

we are going to put them in half of the turkey house - they will have the 'on the ground and not flooring' section that is super easy to clean. its separate from where the turks are hanging and in the 8 x 10-ish side so its a nice big space and we can set up a little yard for them.

so there you have it. let the creepy meat complaining begin!

but in the good news department i think we have a new home for Ginger. after the conviction came on me yesterday....and realizing that i'd pay money to heifer international to give a poor person livestock in a 3rd world.. well.. golly i guess i could take this gal's trade.

we realized that Ginger was free (no stud fee, no vet bills, the neighbor kids did her shots for free plus a tip from Auntie OFG...and she probably didnt eat a whole bag of feed).... so i can "pay it forward" instead of trying to get any real money out of her. i dont know what their circumstance is and for all i know she's gonna take Ginger and sell her at auction. but whatever. saves us the trouble of doing it. and i laughed b/c part of the deal is a bushel of apples. so while i cant get apples from my own MIL.... a random stranger will be bringing me fixin's for a pie. and you know how i feel about pie.

life is funny like that so i'm just going with it.

so thats my story and i'm sticking to it.

happy monday
:)

Apple pie in one had Ginger in the other..... I go with the pie!!! :D

Paying it forward is the way to go.

So if you get the creepy birds next week when do they go to freezer camp? Just wondering.

Didn't your creapy MIL....oh, wait, it is the meat that is creepy....forbid you to pick anymore apples? Did she drink the hard lemonade and waver?

Anyways, I loves me a good trade! Even if it seems like someone else is getting the better end of the deal....it'll come back to you somehow.

I guess I shouldn't go there but why wouldn't your MIL let you pick apples. I'm assuming she can't eat them all herself. Wouldn't she rather have her son/DIL get some apples?

I can't blame you on the chickens. We ate one a little while ago and couldn't believe the amount of meat that we got from one bird. Ended up with more meals from it than we thought we would get. So we are rethinking the whole meat chicken thing ourselves.

nah - she hasnt wavered at all. its the trade-gal who's bringing me the apples
;-)

in fact - the MIL hit another one out of the park. we stopped over after church, chatted a while then said we had to go b/c all the hens were still cooped up due to that chicken eatin' dog and all.. so she says....

"Well maybe if they are inside they will eat better"

....shaking her head in that "those poor little chickens" way like we were starving them. she already thinks that we are starving the ducks (* looks out at the mammoth drakes *) ....but aint no one here dyin' of starvation that is for sure....

so we just shrugged and drove off, apple-less.

and there you have it.

so now i'm gonna get my canner fired up and get some things done.

First of all, apologies to The Big Man - but I think his mom has a screw loose, maybe more than one. She's not playing with a full deck. She's one brick shy of a load. Does she wear a hat made of aluminum foil?

hee hee hee you guys are the best!

so, Free - we got them from Meyer - for 25+ they are $1.26, for a straight run.
http://www.meyerhatchery.com/

we've always had good luck with Meyer. and they are in ohio so they are pretty close. shipping was $13.

KC - aint that right. she always has something to say. i swear if she actually said something nice she would burst into flames. and she likes a fight so we just gave up most of the time... and stand there quietly singing the doxology from church to ourselves hoping she will just stop talking. grr.

K - the apple thing was from a couple weeks ago. she doenst want us to take the apples b/c they dont want them to go to the hogs. but we only took the rotten ones on the ground for the hogs - and we used the rest. and no, there is no way even five families could use all the apples they have this year.

there are some trees that Grandpa planted on the back of the property and we cant even get those - but the renters can have them. the trees are an older variety so i guess they will just rot b/c there are billions of them. its wildly sad if you think about it. most of the time i think she forgets we are her children and not just random folks off the street.

he is the only child so we feel its our duty to keep up relations. she lost me the 2nd time she called him an idiot and the 3rd time she called me a thief. so really for me, there isnt any reason for us to live around here anymore.
:-(

anyway - i think we butchered at just about 9 weeks last time we had the creepy meats... ( *checks notes *) ah yes... here it is...

** warning - pix of meat, meat, and more meat ** and yes thats me swearing we'd never do it again. sheesh!

http://adventuresinthegoodland.blogspot.com/2010/05/creepy-meat-tastes-like-chicken.html

we are just like you K - we re-thought it and are taking another run at meat-dom. FF, Bee, and others are doing something right so we just need to buck up and git 'er done.

:)
