yep, i've got heritage turkeys. i was really wondering cause they were starting to fight, something i was not happy about. but apparently that was just a quick hormonal phase cause everyone seems to be back to business (eating) and ignoring each other. i'm happy to let them get bigger so long as they mind their manners. my goal is to do them closer to Thanksgiving, which would put them around 9 months... i think.

thanks for the tips!

hey bibbird!

yep dont worry too much about the fighting. its more a lot of breaking feathers off than anything. unless someone gets pinned down its more of a ruckus than anything

however, Turkey Bob got pinned down and basically got scalped. it was good for him in the end tho, we put him with Runner and the hens and now he's one of our main toms, along with TZ.

hey Lori!

hand is much better - and back to biz as usual. got tons of applesauce going and doing more canning.

its a beautiful day!

:)

well the bad news is that Silver, one of the hens from this spring's hatch didnt come in last nite. and she wasnt out there this morning. if she has a nest some where she is a sitting duck.. and if something grabbed her.. well. that bodes poorly. we were outside most of the day yesterday and she likes to stay by the house.

time to get the axe out.

the good news is that i got my meat chicks today! 26 little peepers...everyone showed up alive so here's hoping for minimal losses!

the heat is back on hot for the next couple of days.. boo.

happy first day of fall! (today, right?)

I don't think Mother Nature got the memo on what day it is :/
Hopefully Silver comes home soon :fl

I loved the photos of your gardens on the blog, so pretty! I didn't do fall stuff since we put the goat corral where the gardens were and I haven't figured out which area to use next. We are getting kinda limited and might have to plow up the front yard
Our Jerusalem artichokes just bloomed this week - they are at least 15 feet tall and so pretty now. Too bad they look like weeds until they bloom. People keep asking us why we let those weeds grow so big

I vote for tilling up the front yard! I keep trying to talk my DH into doing that! I did however get him to agree to doing it in the side front yard!

I know my day for applesauce making it coming soon! Mmmm...and it makes the house smell so good!

thanks Gina! and yep its delish. i use maybe 1/2c of sugar but the baking brings out so much caramel that it really sweet!

ha! Pams!! how funny thats exactly what i did. my goal is to get all the mowing down in 30 mins with a push mower.. everything else has to be useful.

still no sign of Silver, my missing hen. i told the hubby i was about 30 seconds from getting an Akita puppy. we need a hunter. the hard working farm dogs are good for herding and guarding me... but i think we need a secret weapon against the predators.

our aussie mix Shady, who is about 197, was a great hunter in her day. but now she pretty much barks at shadows. she cant hardly see and its getting harder for her to get up and down the stairs. so who know.. a puppy may be coming soon.

here's one for you. its the hottest day of the fall and i'm making lasagna! sometimes you just have to go with it

oh and lala's chocolate cake.. hum....

;-)

i used to have a big beautiful Akita named Bear. i will say, if it's security you're looking for, an Akita is probably a wonderful idea. they are seriously fearsome to behold protecting their space and their people. Bear was the sweetest boy with me and the family, and he would grudgingly accept people and animals we introduced him to, but strangers that he felt were threatening were in major trouble.

my parents decided we had to rehome him after he mauled and killed one of the farm dogs. to be fair, that dog was insane. his downfall was snapping at me in front of Bear and then not removing himself from the situation when Bear got between us. i believe the term "ripped him limb from limb" could be more literally applied in this case. they weren't mad that he'd killed the crazy dog, just worried because we have so many people coming and going around the farm all the time.

he spent the next 5 years until he died guarding some sheep and romancing the farmer's collie.

eta: if i ever get another Akita, i think i want a silver brindle. they look like marble!

yep, Bibbird. they are incredible dogs. The Big Man had one named Bo..same thing. big baby around us - an amazing hunter and protector. he once fought off some coyotes. wow what a dog!

if i had my druthers i'd get an anatolian shepherd... but TBM is more open to an akita so thats good with me. not that i'd give up my two german shepherd.. no way! i think we just need someone with different skills.

we worked on more fencing today.. slowly but surely we'll get this under control.

:)

and just so's ya know.. some of the meanies over on the herds site are at it again. if you have anything to say about it.. or maybe want to report them... check out the 'my goat is coughing' thread. i'm guessing my comment has already been edited. but i cant stand those bullies over there. what jerks.
