Ofg- you're welcome....did you see my clampett style chicken tractor! Ha!
My Granny E is the same way as your MIL.....love her but man is she a piece of work. She never has liked my mom but then again I'm not sure she's ever really liked anybody. :/
We have order forms out for the meaties and we even have one guy who wants to come help us process them so he can see how to do it all.....funny isn't it how people are starting to get it that supermarket food is not especially good for you now.... people around here are buying up pullets like crazy after all that egg salmonella junk.
Happy Birthday KC! I guess we'll really have to party today!!!
SO decided to cook dinner last night. He's not too fond of liver. We had deer steaks instead.
I am just going to have to make that liver for myself and the dog. I love , LOVE liver with onions and apples and mashed potatoes. I might just break down and buy some potatoes from a local farm stand....
Happy friday. and Happy butchering day OFG. We have to do some of ours in real soon here. When they start to crow, they gotta go! First we have to finish off the deer though. And those vegetables keep coming in too. Arrgh, there just are not enough hours in the day or energy in my body to get it all done. How did those pioneers do it all, with little ones underfoot to boot!!! and no running water or electricity!!!
Ok, I'm off to feed the critters, harvest and process stuff....
hey dudes! (remember i only use my west coast slang under duress)
so we had a GREAT day!
but i burned my hand so it hurts to type. dont worry its just a flesh wound
;-)
no really - no big whoop but i'm milking it for all its worth. The Big Man is in there remaking the bed and i'm having him fan me with palm fronds later
yes i totally burned the palm of my hand in the AWESOME burn pile we had yesterday! that thing is gonna burn for days. whoot!
so big day yesterday - we butchered 6 roosters and instantly the whole hen yard breathed a collective sign of relief. they were all mutts but we learned a lot about breeds and what does and does not work.
mostly we were shocked and stunned at how puny the BO roo was! i mean he was mostly feathers! so kinda mad about that. i bought him this spring b/c i WANTED a BO roo as my main man. but nope. he was a disaster. he just chased the turkeys, abused the hens, and ran like a crazy fool EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT.
buff orps = F-
the roo that dressed the best was the light brahma. in fact... Little Pansy was headed for the pot until we dressed that other one. now Little P is gonna be out there with all the girls. i'd love a whole mess of them!
we are keeping the two black auslt. roo's to see which one we are gonna keep. one is a great flock protector..the other one needs a lesson in manners. or noodles. could be he'll be learning about noodles very soon.
but for today we have things on the agenda so i'm scooting off. but first..
FD - i laughed all last nite about "when they start to crow, they got to go" i swear i'm gonna get that on a tshirt
java - i think i love your duck Fran.. what a hoot!
KC - hope you had a fun bday!
Lori - i KNOW we are getting more folks asking for eggs and such.
BibBird - we have heritage birds (i think you do too) so the jakes take a while to grow out. i'm sure there are specifics out there, and you can always check under their wing to see if they have yellow fat developing just under the skin.
for us, we had a trio of jakes that beat the tar out of our main tom, TZ. thats when they went to the block. those must have been almost a year old if not a little more. they all dressed to 20lbs+!!!! (and probably closer to 23 pounds each) they were too big and frankly hard to handle. if yours are too big check with Buster and his big old 50lbs turkey method (and his killer axe!).
we also did some jakes that were less than a year.. probably 8 months? they were almost too young. we got a good amount of meat and they had some nice fat on them. i'd say they were good "table sized" birds. but not a ton of leftovers. i'm gonna say they were under or about at 15lbs? we probably should have let them go another month, but we needed the room in the turkey house.
remember that we part up all our turkeys - no sense is a big ol roasted turk for the two of us. so for us bigger is better but too big is a wrestling match.
Turkey Steve is back online over at BYC.. he's always got the best advice
