I got up early this morning (4:45 Am by this new time) because I had to go to the bathroom and my dog decided she had to go too. So I let her out, went back into the bathroom and when I opened the back door to let her back in, she was nowhere to be seen. Now you must realize, she's getting on up in years and arthritic and it was 28 degrees here this AM. So I got the flashlight, threw on my bathrobe, coat, and rubber boots (cause they stand by the back door) and off I went softly calling that mutt. Didn't want to wake up the neighbors, you know. I went around the house, down the back yard around the shop and couldn't find her. As I headed back up to the house there she was slowly ambling back to the house.

So, I've had my excitement for the day, I may just lay back down for awhile. I haven't changed my clocks yet - I couldn't stand the idea of the alarm going off at 6:20 instead of 7:20 which is when I release the birds from their prison. I had to carry water to them this morning. Their nipple waterer was frozen. So much for advanced technology. Happy Sunday everyone.

We had pork loin saute'd in bacon fat and simmered in homemade cream of mushroom soup and the creamy part poured off a bottle of goat's milk. It was so good, we are making it again tonight! Nothing like bacon fat! :drool

Bacon.....the gift that keeps on giving...

I finally got SO on the BACON team. He made breakfast, bacon (he cooked the whole package), poured off some of the bacon grease into the bacon jar to fill it back up, poured some of it over the dog's food, cooked the eggs in some of it and then fried up a mess of potatoes in the remainder. And he proudly told me all about it, while we were eating. Woot!
I think it helped that he watched King Corn last night. Proved to him once again, that I know what I am talking about ;)

Here piggy, piggy :drool

I think we'll have BLT's and minestrone soup for dinner tonight.

well. i imagine i'll be doing some repentin' later but for now my blood is still pretty hot. so i'll work on that later. but here's my full confession:

saturday nite i went out to find one of my favorite little hens, Imp, dead. obviously one of the Brothers Dread - the 2 black australorp roos I kept back from our last rooster day - had cornered her and killed her in a fit of "passion," so to speak. she didnt have a chance.

we'd noticed the 2 huge black roos were starting to feel their oats, and together with a 3rd (a buff orp) they were starting to terrorize the hens. and starting to crowd me while i was out there. i banded the worst one and he (and that golden one) was going to be included we had another hen house harvest. but hadnt gotten around to it. i'm sick now that i didnt just get it done.

my little Imp was a singleton from a couple summers ago - she was the perfect hen for here - a good layer, heavy in body and perfectly wedge shaped, the tiniest little comb, and a sweet little disposition. she figured out the goats spill their food when they are on the milking stand so she was my milking helper and always at my feet. not two days earlier i had decided that in the spring i'd pair her up with the best roo and get a bunch of her eggs into the incubator.

and there she was in a heap.

i came out of the hen house swinging.

everyone ran.

The Big Man got ahold of me and said we should snatch up the offenders and we'd take care of them the following day (sunday). i was good with that.

my hubby gently took up poor Imp and i went after the roosters. and "snatch up" is just what i did - Dog#1 helped me. there was some feather loss. i didnt feel bad. our two 'volunteers' sat nervously in their coops. i think one of the hens the black roo had previously cornered stood on the outside of the coop and said, "not so funny now, is it?" he didnt have any last words.

so yesterday after church we marched out there. well. i ran out there with a wild look in my eyes. we got our first volunteer... and unlike when Little Rooster Met His Untimely End: (http://adventuresinthegoodland.blogspot.com/2010/03/how-little-rooster-met-his-unjust-end.html)

I told The Big Man to use as much malice as he wanted to send that mean roo to glory. he did. and the next one too

we didnt even bother plucking, such was my rage. and i may have had an Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom moment (queue the Kali Ma dancers) when i ripped out that roos heart and snarled.. "This is for Imp you son-of-a-golly-what!"

i honestly think my hubby was afraid i'd eat that roo's heart right there. i didnt.

so anyway, the blood debt has been satisfied and my little Imp has gone on to her rest in that big hen house in the sky.

i noticed that one of the amish ladies was selling her home made noodles at one of the shops in town. so i'm fixin' to go down and get me some noodles... then i'll be fixin' some noodles. with a side of mean rooster.

order up!
