good thing they are cute! ha!

oh you shoulda seen Dog#1... he was magnificent.... all low and ready to spring... i love that i can trust him
:)

really - i cant wait to go running out there with him and Kai.. whooot!

Dog#2 tho.. he's better with butterflies and rounding up the chickens. heading into battle isnt really his thing. altho he's willing to kill TurkZilla for me
;-)

anyway. the knife we used (for the sticking) was from wal-mart or target.. i think it was like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-47...r_1_1?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1292299239&sr=1-1

i have a beautiful henckle boning knife that i used for everything else including the "parting up."

ok is -6* and i gotta take kai out. yikes! where's my dang snow pants!?!

i'm out
;-)
ps my hubby and i create a nerd vortex that is felt in the next county.

Yes, they are darn cute, and not your typical poodles. Not useful against anything big, being about 20 and 30 lbs each. They would take small body parts off anyone who threatened me, though, I'm sure of that....just as long as they get the right parts, I'm good! :D

I have a fantastic boning knife that I got at the butcher's when I went in for leaf lard for rendering...on a display board of knives was a used boning knife. The blade was starting to get thin from all the sharpening, but it will last me for years and really holds an edge. Don't know the brand, but it is SHARP! Glad I can use it for skinning. I think I paid something like $7 for it....woohoo!

The cl person emailed me back, it is $37 per hour for two guys and he says it will take two hours per pig, so expect around $250. I guess Dad is back on the job by himself!!! A couple of guys that dh works (Nigerians, I think) with wants to eat our buckling when he is done with the girls. I told dh to offer a trade, butcher the pigs in exchange for the buckling. I think they might agree to that, they really want the goat.

Sadly, the little guy has become a sweetie since moving in with the does. The older gals beat him into submission, and now he is taking cues on how to behave towards me from the doelings, who love me and suck up for treats. I hope he gets obnoxious again reallllllllly soon. Sigh.

all i have to do is quote LOTR's dialogue and throw out a couple random bits of background trivia and he'll get all googley-eyed at me.

anyway. dont know if your man has a nerd-crush on you but it worked for me.
My husband isn't nearly as nerdy as I am, but he does have a geek streak. He is just a geek about different things than me. I would need to start talking about the stock market or quoting lines from The Blues Brothers Movie :D

What the important lesson here is, is that someone sitting nearby talking and playing with you while you do a heinous hard task is VALUABLE!

Whether they are chatting about their day or reading nerd cards or telling you about the last football game they watched is of no circumstance. They keep your brains happy while your body endures the task.

I give the Big Man and his nerd cards a rating of.... :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup thumbs up.

And I give him another :thumbsup for realizing his limitations and not trying to do the "Man's Work" for you. You got a keeper there.

a big ole AMEN to Farm and KC!

OFG, while you're husband has a nerd crush on you, i think i have a supportive-and-handy crush on your husband. DON'T EVEN get me started on the serious woman-can-do-anything-AND-write-like-a-fiend crush i have on YOU! :D

i wish you guys were my neighbors.

ETA: i found a picture of my Akita, Bear, and i had to share it with you. he was a handsome man (but not as cute as Kai).

I wish I could get SO to let me do the skinning. He is in such a darn rush. His side of the skin had lots of meat and holes in it :/. And since he got "done" with his side first, he started to "help" me on my side. So I have soo much more work to do on that skin, cleaning it, working around the holes and fixing the holes. :/

I am sending SO out to hunt me a porker. Wild pork = tripple yum. And we don't have to keep one in the back yard either!!!

we are DONE! finally... and exhausted. we finished up grinding the last of the meat, we've gone the first batch of lard going, and 2 huge stockpots of bones and such. i have more stock to do later but i'm done for today.

we finished just in time to get everyone put to bed - early. another brutally cold nite and no one is happy AT ALL.

one fun thing when we were cutting up the halves - i squared up one of the roasts and had 2 weird end pieces... we were gonna put them in the bag titled "Snack Chops".. but we were too transfixed by their lusciousness...so we threw them in a pan and fried them up right there.

kinda like what we did with the roast yesterday. yum!

my city friends are horrified i cut a whack of meat off a half-a-pork and then just cooked it. and ATE it.

anyway - its not even 8pm and i think i'm going to bed.

stay warm everyone...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz................

Just had our hog butchered...as a matter of fact, they are finishing him up outside. They said he was 325 pounds!

Sam is crying but we have been talking about it before and again after. She understands, this is her first time though. Time to watch Food Inc again.

He was a good pig that had a good life. :/ (I have to admit, I'm a bit sniffly too.)

Maybe next time it will be easier for us both, then one day, maybe we can be just as brave as you ofg. :)
