Where did everyone go? There are only like 4 folks here on line. :p

I just wanted to say one thing about geese. The guy that runs our drive-through feed store has all kinds of farm animals for sale, he is the guy I got my sheep from.

He has a mean as heck goose-gander (boy right?) that keeps everyone in their car and the line moving. Better keep your windows up too. :p He WONT sell that goose for any amount of money, it's name is Gus.

On a serious note.....

Here's what I learned yesterday about dogs and farm dirt:

1. Dogs are ridiculous
2. Farm dirt, in a wound, sometimes results in horrible bacterial infections which can be 'cellulitis' - where the infection doesn't lay on top of the tissue - it gets INTO the tissue and is very difficult to treat/get rid of..but it can be done.
3. If a dog (or whoever, I imagine....) gets a puncture wound the vet should immediately culture the infection to see what kind of bacteria it is so that it can be treated with the right antibiotic.
4. Really good vets are hard to find.

Back story:

I will tell you as a fact that I am suspicious of doctors and veterinarians of all kinds. I personally have fired several vets for being doofuses... or not knowing enough....or not listening to me to the point of putting 3 of my pets in mortal danger.

The best vet I have is my cat's vet with whom I once had an animated 'discussion' for almost an hour regarding cat poop. In the end we determined a solution and voila cat, who had been sick for weeks, was fix in a day. Was I the hero, well no, but I was right... and the vet didn't dismiss what I was saying...which he used to determine a solution....so he was.

So, when my neighbor's goofy golden retriever had seen the same vet several times for a head wound that would not heal for weeks...and the best solution their vet could come up with was to cut him open and cut out the tissue.... or just give up and put down a perfectly healthy dog (except for a bump on his head). That vet told the neighbor he really didn't know what was wrong or what to do....well, I got my dander up. We packed up the goofy golden and headed into The Big City to see an extraordinary dog vet that I knew.

The neighbor had already spent almost $1000 on the goofy golden. Nothing had really worked so this was the hail mary. We sat patiently and gave the whole background to The Very Good Vet... she took notes. She listened. We told her our mommy intuition was screaming at us that the other vet didn't have the right solution. She examined the goofy golden for a while. He squirmed but was a good dog.

When she was done she turned around and said there was no reason to give that dog a surgery, that it wouldn't have done anything but mutilate his pretty face, and the right thing to do was to do a culture, get the right antibiotic, and expect it to take until spring to heal... and since she had a dog with the same kind of thing once... she knew exactly what it was. Oh and by the way that farm dirt that we all have is heck on puncture wounds... great for compost, bad for wounds, and next time always get a culture first so you don't waste $1000 on ineffective treatments.

We blinked.

That was it?

Yep.

No hacked up, franken-dog? No sad burial for the goofy golden?

Nope.

Relieved, we drove home with a good reminder that we all have farm dogs who get into everything, including farm dirt...and wounds that don't heal need to be aggressively treated in the right way.

And it was a great reminder that its ok to seek out another opinion especially if your vet's best solution is I dunno... lets just cut it out. Yikes! As I write this my 19 year old cat is sitting with me she was one of the 'in mortal danger' cases where just switching vets saved her life. And yes, that new vet fixed her in a day. A day! She had suffered for months! The previous vet told me she had cancer and was going to die. That was.. oh 16 years ago... I'm glad I went somewhere else.

As for human doctors... don't even get me started.....

:clap Why is it that docs of any kind dismiss our women's/mother's intuition? They see a child or a pet for 5 min. and we live with them every day....I think we know when something is wrong or not.

Same way with mechanics.....buddy, I know when my car is making a strange noise...I drive it every darned day! :duc

OFG, I think it's all about degrees. Not the kind they hand out at the end of a term of education. The degree one pays attention in class, the difference between a D student and an A student, just barely scraping by or really getting into your schooling when it comes to doctors.

One has to wonder if, instead of the certificate of their PhD hanging on the wall if they should, instead, have their report cards for all to see. ;)

And sometimes it is more than just book learning and comes down to just plain' ol' common sense! :)

Glad you were able to help this Goofy Golden! :clap
