My condolences on having to deal with that.......your remark about the over-dramatic coughing reminded me of my MIL. Mine is a hypochondriac.....we always joke that when she is really ill and dying, no one will believe her because she has been telling us about her imminent departure for 30 years now.

Oh my. Well, I'm lucky in one aspect. I have thoroughly trained my family. Behave (by the AbiFae definition) or I don't visit. For some bizarre reason they want me to visit so badly that they behave. And when their bs level threatens to drown me, I tell them I'm done now.

So, my dad no longer prays loudly and ostentatiously before meals when we eat out (I have no issue with prayer before eating. Studies have even show you digest the food better when you pray first, my issue is that he holds up a neon sign that says "GOOD CHRISTIAN HERE!!" with arrows pointed at him while he does so. LOL. So now he prays quietly to himself and then digs in.

My mom no longer mentions how fat I am. In fact, I've weened her away from insults around the subject. "Oh, isn't that a lovely fattening piece of cheese. Do you go to the gym every day still? You really should. You look great, by the way."

Although they are all oddly and over interested in my sex life. :idunno

So, that's my advice: ground family members from visiting with a list of reasons you cannot have them around and see if they wanna see you enough to change.

I'm not totally unreasonable. I haven't asked my mom to not ramble psychotically and pointlessly, driving me nuts because I cannot find the point and she has no logic :p

Why the HELL is anyone calling YOU fat? Unless you've changed that much since we met you that day, there's no way you could ever be classified as even slightly overweight!!!

Abi's mom is anorexic, therefore someone with a normal body weight is "fat". Having seen abi weighing MUCH less, I think she is perfect right now even though she whines like a girl if her tummy is a tiny bit poofy on some days :hugs

OFG... that is hilarious. Sorry to laugh at your predicament, but I have relatives and inlaws too and you are not alone :D

What IS it with MIL's and "the over exaggerated cough"?!?! MINE does that too!! When she wants to get off the phone, she fakes a cough, like she's choking. I rarely call her for that reason, but sometimes I HAVE to. It's just weird. She kills me with her illnesses too. She really does get sick, but she will stay in the bed for literally 4 or 5 days over a little mild nasal allergy issue, and have poor FIL as her do boy the entire time. I don't get it :hu Maybe it's just a MIL "thing?"

Sorry you had to suffer severe over exposure to the MIL :hugs I'd have screamed  GOOD deals on those beans and tomatoes though!!! :thumbsup

That.

Only when I'm really hormonal, Auntie :hide

ColoWyo... I've gained THIRTY pounds. I mean, when you saw me, I was 30 pounds heavier than when she called me fat. So, you can just think on that. :th

I think "sick" is the new cry for love and attention. During Victorian times, it was hysteria and vapors. :gig

Abi - i think i have the vapors from being with the MIL! ha!

thanks! all i can do is laugh about it...
:)

unfortunately the MIL isnt trainable - or at least i should say, she's not mine to train.

i do it old school and without mercy and i'm immune to anyone's sad face and weepy little eyes...for instance... today Nibbles decided she was NOT going to do the new yard and so she dramatically threw herself down ON THE GROUND. i'm not kidding, fully spread out and everything in the dirt. i took one look at her and said to TBM:

Get. The. Dog.

who was only too happy to motivate Nibbles to hustle right on down to the new yard.

the whole way down there i could barely keep up with her.... but i kept telling Nibbles:

"You'd better hurry, Missy! That dog says that little brown goats taste the best!"

she ran like the devil himself was after her.

anyway. i cant use these methods on the MIL....altho i dream of telling Kai that the poodles are delicious and she should eat one.
;-)

you're right, Zilla.. i should point out that MIDWEST poodle is totally different in taste and texture than east coast poodle - which is better for snuggling then for grilling.
