i cant afford vermiculite, but aparently you can use straight compost or a compost/peat mix you just watch the moisture level, mermiculite is just to hold moisture so without it you aparently have to be a little more aware of watering but otherwise get the same results, the peat just lightens up the compost mix whic will bog down if just that is used...
alot of poeple have aparently had good luck with straight compost, some mix in potting and top soil ect...so im going to try 50/50 compost and peat this year and then top dress whenever possible with the rabbit manure...and then next year ill top up using just compost (peat sheds water so if you add too much your beds will dry out too quickly) but it adds alot of loft to the potentially heavy manure/compost so...
ive got my fingers crossed because your right the vericulite is painfull expensive...
ive been told some sub it out for pearlite but thats also quite expensive...
i think as long as i keep ontop of making sure there getting enough water and feed regularly with the rabbit manure (sqft method feeds pretty heaviliy for obvious reasons) we should be ok...but we'll see what happens.

from what ive read though the vermiculite is soley for aiding in holding water without waterlogging the bed...
so im hoping we can get away without it
*fingers crossed*

I don't use it often, and my stuff does fine. Like you said, just watch the water level of things :hu

now if i could just find some salt water fish enthusiasts who'd buy this dang protein skimmer ive been holding onto for way too long, it needs to go.
that would be a nice little help too.
Wish we were closer, we'd take it off you hands for ya! Ours froze out in the shed and we need to replace 2 of the 3 canisters. I've been having to use dechlorinated city water in our small reef tank, at my mom's, for top-offs and the algae is loving the nasty stuff. :barnie

Can't believe someone actually said that crap in the e-mail to you! :smack

id be willing to ship but i dont think it would work for your system, its a small HOB style skimmer, probably good for 55 gals max.

got up this morning to the pat pat of rain, dozer whining and the cat having a hissy fit because she needed to go outside and needed to go out now...
it was my normal wake up time, but i could have done wihtout the whning and cat screaching...man she has a big mouth for a little itty bitty 4 1/2lb kitty
warned her it was raining, she wanted out anyway, dove off the back deck halfway across the backyard realized i was indeed corect and wet stuff was falling form the sky, ran al the way back to the house and hid under the deck...
i couldnt help but laugh at her lol.
the rain obviously also means ruby is on potty boycot...shell hold it most of the day now...she hates the rain, and the sad part is, i have the carport, while id prefer them to not use that area as a potty, in weather like this i dont mind (easy clean up with a scoop and a splash of hot water) and she still sits cowering in the corner as if the rain is somehow going to whip right up and under the carport like some dervish and wash her away...she realy hates the rain.

then came inside where my internet connection was down.
ill say this for charter though thier automated troubleshooter is pretty dang good...infact i think i like the automated system more than speking to a live person.lol

dozer lost one of his back puppy teeth this morning too, its sooo tiny compaerd to his big ole giant head, and means hes growing up...back teeth alwasy come out first with the canines last.
got to start planning for his neuter, hes getting a little bossy with jasper as the hormones are comming in. im reluctant to neuter "early" as in the big guys it can cause the growth plates to go all wonky...BUT i dont want to wait and neuter after dominance issues start in the worry that once they get rolling...theyll not stop.
so right now the plan is to try and get him neutered at 6-8 months anywhere between April and June...

today is going to be a toodle about kind of day, weathers to soggy to do outside stuff even if it does stop raining...so i think im going to try and paint the trim...its my least favorite part about painting so lets see how much i can get done :p

and now...now i have hiccups...oh lovely!

just waiting for the rain to die down a little then ill go tend to the buns and grab the can of paint. :)
gotta rattatch my curtain rod too...

I love the fraidy-cat stories! Still got the hiccups? Drink a glass of water upside down! Always works for me!

How do you drink water upside down...and how do you not just drown yourself?!

Let's see... how do I explain this... you bend over and drink from the far rim of the glass... drink upside down... can you picture it?

If drinking upside down doesn't work for me, which it usually does, then I swallow a teaspoon of sugar. The sugar doesn't always work though. I've tried scaring myself, but I have a hard time catching me off guard! ;)

A teaspoon of sugar would just make me ralph :sick That's nasty...the idea of THAT should scare you out of the hiccups!
