Pretty much the way I do it too... I've tried both - snipping down the spine and raking guts out with fingers. I think I like leaving the spine in cuz it just makes a prettier bird, lol. But dang girl - you gotta eat some of them! They are the best things ever! My original plan was to use 'em for dog food too, but as it turns out - I might not want to share 'em with the dogs, lol.

I'm gonna start a new batch in a couple weeks - I don't want to have any babies that need to be taken care of over Christmas holidays. I'm gonna try to keep hatching so that neither me nor the dogs will have to do without!

id prefer to leave the spine intact for the dogs at least but have a hard time getting the guts out that way...Id like to leave liver and heart and even lungs in and just take out the crop and intestine...because in doggy world those things tend to get left behind...
but I couldn't get my fingers into the cavity to get everything out without removing the spine completely and they were so tiny that anything other than the cats I doubt would chew them enough to be safe.

I definatly plan on eating some myself, and hoping to get enough going in the sring to have enough hatching to keep the dogs and myself in pretty constant supply (I call quail single serving chicken as a serinvg size of meat for me is about 4oz...LOL) I love quail...but cutting the feed bioll for the dogs is higher on my to do list since I relay don't eat that much on a normal day...

if the move to NJ comes off without a hitch though I think im going to need to increase my cages as itll be me, the dogs and 4 more adults lol.

Ill also be raising chicken in tractors specifically for meat too, Cornish or Cornish crosses. they'll be needed for the chicken part of kieras diet but right now .59 a lb is too cheap to even bother trying to raise my own chicken. lol.

Apple Crumble made and sat in the fridge (will get put in the oven to bake while were eating tomorrow. always best served hot :D
bread is rising, tried a new recipie today, *fingers crossed*
and cranberry sauce is simmering...smells sooo good...
I make it with tangerine juice and vest and just a ltitle bit of nutmeg, I HATED cranberry "sauce" until I started making my own...im not sure what that jellied stuff in a can is...but real cranberry sauce is yummy!

the bread is a take on the recipie used by my fave steak house texas roadhouse, but its whole wheet flour instead of white...everything else is the same...hoping it comes out 1/2 as good as the roadhouse bread is

Apple crumble sounds good! and homemade bread too! I know what you mean about the canned gelatinous red stuff that some folks call cranberry sauce Hope you have a wonderful day!

thank,
apple crumble is super easy, peel core and slice apples and toss em in a deep baking pan as thick as you want, splash with lemon and sugar to taste (I like brown sugar) nutmeg, cinnamon or allspice are also optional.

then make the topping, 4 oz butter COLD, 6oz flour and again sugar to taste (tends to be about 4oz)
and mush it together coarsely to make a coarse breadcrumb....or use a blender. stick ontop and bake 375 for about 30 mins or so (you want the apples to be bubbly) then let sit until its not molten lava inside anymore :D
and tada! done!

if you like more topping double :D

I've always wanted to make my own cranberry sauce, but have never had the time.

oh once you make home made its one of those cant do canned stuff again issues...(unles sits canned home made stuff)

literally add 1 cup of liquid, zest of a small orange, 2/3 cup of sugar and a back of cranberries to a bot, bring to simmer over medium heat and simmer for about 15 mins, less if you prefer a chunkier cranberry sauce, longer if you prefer it smoother.

the cranberry sauce whent over a HUGE hit...had a couple of people turn their noses up they "don't eat cranberry sauce" and yet, mine was gone and those that ummed about it ate the most LOL!

the bread was a success and the crumble was a HUGE hit.

all in all it was a good thanksgiving, Keira did amazingly well, the food was great, company lovely...
got home and now realy missing my family...
keira however is PASSED OUT!

ruby and jasper did great and so did the cats, while I was gone on the overnight so that's also a nice bonus...

me however..i don't sleep well in strange places, eneded up sharing bedspace with an extra body due to lack of sleeping and extra people...didn't mind that part, but keira wouldn't settle until she got on the bed and snuggled up with me...and the other person was a little on the larger side too so I didn't get much sleep, it was also WEE morning hours before things whent quiet enough to try...
needless to say im seriously looking forward to my own bed tonight....
hoping for a long night of deep restful sleep.

tomorrow ive got to run to my frineds house to check on their cats, but then the rest of the day will be a lazy one...I have no money anyway so no worries about attempting black Friday sales...and despite being mentally unsound, im not CRAZY! no way in hell I want out in the craziness of black Friday.

and yeah...gonna go check mail get caught up then curl up in bed and let sleep consume me lol

I don't sleep well in strange places either. More often than not, it's noisier than here as well as lighter. I live on a dead end street w/no street lights, so unless I can hear the traffic from a nearby highway, it's dead quiet here.
