my tanks a 55gal, id love bigger but the cost is just prohibitive so this will be as big as i go for now lol.
i LOVE my fish tanks, they just...its therapy lol.

for a 10 gal be carefull with guppies, 3 guppies tends to turn into 300 guppies fairly quickly when theres nothign else in the tank lol.
you could go all males, lots of flash and color but no risk of practicint the multiplication tables but youll have alot of activity at the top of the tank and not much below...

personally in a 10 gal if you like the guppies, id do 5 male guppies and then a group of 5 glowlight tetras, the glowlights will occupy midspace in the tank adding some visual interest and once they get settled into a tank they have that flash of brilliant orange darting around realy stands out :D
the guppies then play around the top with thier flashy colors and fancy fins
other mid section choices would be neons/cardinals (though they can be incredibly delicate) .
cherry barbs (a favorite of mine, the males get BRIGHT red while the females are more of a brown orange, they are NOT agressive like most barbs (keep 5 or more)
rosy barbs are pretty too, especially if you have a girl into pink, the males have this cool irridessant pink and gold colration, but they get a little bigger, and 5 in a 10 gal tank would probably be pushing the bioload unless there the only ones in there...
danios are frequently sold as beginner fish (especially the new GLO-Fish (geneticaly enginered zebra danios) however they tend to inhabit the surface of the tank (like the guppies) so they tend to compete and can be nasty fin nippers.

in terms of algea eaters be VERY carefull, the fish typically sold as algea eaters are chinese algea eaters, they get big and agressive, first few years will be fine, then youll find your other fish start to go missing.
plecos are also often sold as algea eaters, there is not a pleco available thats suitable for a 10 gal tank. the dwarf species like bristlenoses need a minimum of 20 gals, the plecos usually sold in petstores however are common plecos, they are "tank busters" will grow over 2 ft long (or die from lack of space long before then) and only eat algea as babies (as they mature they eat wood lol)

look for ottos
http://www.fishlore.com/profiles_otocinclus.htm
there tiny. there cute, and there the best algea eaters ever...they do need to be kept in groups (3 minimum) but ive found thier impact on the bioload to be incredibly minisule (i count 1 inch of otto as 1/2 an inch lol.
no algea in the tank though you will need to feed algea wafers for them.

if your more interested in bottom cleaners than algea issues then instead id go for a group (3 minimum) of corydora instead
http://www.fishlore.com/Profiles-Corydoras.htm
i LOVE cory cats, there cute theyre active, they dont impact your bioload as badly as some of the other clean up crew does.

or another good option for both bottom and algea control are cherry shrimp, assuming you stick to guppies and small tetras the cherry shrimp will be safe (they tend to get eaten by larger fish lol) and there an AMAZING cleanup crew
theyll take anything that falls to the bottom and theyll also consume any algea that grows...there kinda cute too
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherry_shrimp

personally if it were my tank, id do 3-5 male guppies, 5 glowlight tetra or cherry barbs, and, either 1 dozen cherry shrimp, 3 ottos or 3 corydora.

and to get the most color out of your fish, go with a dark substrate and background, fish always look brighter against black so i always go black gravel or sand and a plain black background, makes the fish no matter what color REALY pop!
I still need to get the background for my 55, im not paying pet store prices so i have to find a paice of heavy black paper to stick back there to hide the wires and give the fish somehting to pop against :D

fishy keeping is a passion of mine...i swear if i could get a job setting up peoples fishtanks id be extatic...i loe decorating them, setting things up, figuring out layouts and making them asthetically pleasing as well as functional lol...
and i RARELY use items form the fish store either lol.

gonna post some of my tank pics in a few mins, there not great, my camera isnt exactly "fancy" and doesnt do well in lower light situations (and doesnt like fast moving objects lol)

Oh Pink, where were you when we tried to give DS#2 fish for his birthday a few years ago?! All that info is so helpful, makes me want to tank shopping! :)

the 2 current angels
1 gold, 1 gold marble, both veils currently about "dime" sized (body is about the size of a dime) fins make them aproximatly 2" tall
016.jpg

the brilliant rasbora, there is 6 of them, these guys are realy pretty, plain body with a black stripe and then a silver/green flash stripe, the tails will also become red as they mature
014.jpg

the neons, currently 11 (lost one on tis first day home) this has to be one of my FAVORITE tropical fish, they can be delicate but there sooo worth it, in large numbers there ever so flashy!

and the tank.

the plants and the teracotta pots actually coem from the craft store, most places will give you broken teracotta pots for pennies...and the silk plants were $1-$3 a peice (compared with normal qauarium plants) they can be tricky to get to stay (i wedge them behind pots and into the gravel) because unlike regular aquarium plants they have no base or weights...you can make your own bases for none aquarium silk and plastic plants with some gravel, resin/2 part marine epoxy and a yogurt pot!
put some gravel in the yogurt pot about 2" deep, shove plant/s in and arrange as desired, and then carefully pour the resin in and let it set. cut yogurt pot away and tada, weighted aquarium plants at a fraction of the cost.

the driftwood peice was a found peice on the beach, it got multiple soak and bake cycles (driftwood has to be baked to clean and soaked multiple times before it becomes not DRIFT wood (itll float if its not properly seasoned lol) itll also leech tannins if not properly seasoned making your water turn into the color of tea...its not harmfull and actually good for some fish, but its not realy "pretty" even petstore aquarium dfitwood should go through multiple soakings if you dont want to tannin your water.

the dragon ill admit is from petsmart, he was on clearance as hes missing a toe and part of his tail (im a sucker for the needy lol) hes a bubbler though and i thought he looked super cool, he needed a home and the price was right so now he blows bubbles in my tank lol.
the little ship ive had since i was TINY TINY, its traveld the world and been in every fish tank ive ever owned...it was origonally one of those air action ornaments but the plastic tube degraded over the years so now it just sits around...:)

the gravel is the only thing i paid ful price for lol...and that was the cheapest black i could find (i prefer sand but it was too expensive since you need a 2" bed for proper bio build up, 2 inches of gravel is about 1lbs per gal, sand is double that! so a 55 gal tank will have 55lbs of gravel minimum or 110lbs of sand...i whent with a small gravel.

the tank is running a fully submersible tetra brand heater, rated for up to 6o gallons, and 2 HOB aquatech filters both rated for up to 40 gals of water (so im filtering the tank as if it was an 80 gallon tank)
im using 2 hobs for a number of reasons, 1 its what i had (mums running my 30-60 gal aquateck on the 30 gal at home that has her goldfish in for the winter), 2 if 1 filter dies on me, ive got a back up, sure it wont keep 55 gals running clean for long, but it would give me a little more leeway getting to the store to replace it, 3, doing 2 filters gives me a higher filtration rate, (80 gals worth) and better circulation as im running 1 at either end of the tank.
im also running a large air pump thats currently supporting the bubble dragon airstone and a second airstone under the driftwood...
this is purely for decoration as i dont nessicarily NEED the addied surface agitation (airstones dont put o2 in the water the bubbles instead agrivate the surface of the water increasing the surface area allowing better o2 exchange, in a tank with no active filtration an airstone is a great addition, however on a tank with a hob or canister filter, its more for pretty than use lol. (plus the fish seem to like to play in the bubbles LOL)

hope you enjoy my not so great pictures as much as i enjoy my little hobby :p

lol, my personal opinion is that a house is not a home without at least 1 fish tank, even if its only 2 gallons with a betta fish.
its soooo calming to just sit and watch them swim about.

if you decide to set up a tank id be HAPPY to help with pointers/suggestions ect.
i will say this though, bigger is better...if your thinking about going 5 gals and can afford a 10, go 10, if your thinking 10 and a 20 is on sale, go 20 ect...always go for the biggest tank you can afford and house.
the bigger the tank the less likely small water fluctuations are to crash the entire ecosystem...
not to mention fihs are addictive...and most folks end up going bigger within their first year anyway LOL!

i mean theres so many cool fish, many need to be kept in schoals too, so you fall in love with this and you want some of those and next thing you know your 10 gal is over stocked and your looking at 125's lol.

right now i have my 55 in the livingroom (its th iggest tank i can fit in here with my current lay out...and i doubt ill be going bigger on that any time in the semi neer future...
then theres the 7 gal mini bow in my bedroom, it currently houses 1 betta.
then ive got 2 1 gallon wall tanks in the back bedroom that curretnly home more bettas...
the current plan is to add some white clouds mountain minnos (6 of) and some cherry shrimp to th 7 gallon tank

i save power by putting lights (and air pumps) on timers, the airpump comes on when the lights do and go off when they go off, lights get run 12 hours a day, the only thigns constantly running on the 55 are the filters and heat
on the betta tank the filter and light are on the same timer, so the filter goes off at night right now too...though once i add more inhabitants that filter will have to run 24/7 as well.

I've always like neon tetras. I'm hoping when I get the house all done to get a tank. We always had fish when I was growing up, and I miss it. I have the pond in the back yard, and it has quite a number of gold fish in it (I just got the feeders for cheap in a pet store, and they're quite happy in there!), but it's not quite the same.

agreed, i love ponds, ive got big plans for a little pond in my garden, but a tropical tank? just something special about sitting in a dim room, the glow of the fishtank, the sond of the water, and the flashes of beautiful colors and shapes.

You're awesome!

We were gonna go with 8 male guppies but now I may do 5 male guppies and the 5 tetras or cherry barbs. I will check and see if they have any shrimp, that would thrill my son, even though it is not his tank.

I used to have a 10 gallon tank with mollys and platys and I loved them. I have to have a heater with this one cause our household temps are just too cold. Tyler wanted a betta and he bought a little 1.5 gallon tank and it died in like 2 days and I'm thinking my husband threw the tank away.

I want to get some little castle something to go in it and she wanted green gravel, she also liked a package of pink, white, and black gravel but it is so bright you wouldn't notice the fish.....I want to put a real plant in there too, I just like the real ones better.

Tyler has a 70 gallon tank in his room but it has a tree frog, bahaman anole, and 3 american toads in it. One thing I really have enjoyed having is the fire bellied toads....they have a water area and a little drier area with rocks and a tree to climb on and they have a filter that runs 24-7. Tyler uses the light in their tank as a night light so it stays on 24-7 too. We have a male and a female. They are pretty.

what you could do with the gravel is go with a 5lb bag of black, and then make up the rest with 1lb bags of mixed colors...itll give you that dark base to make things pop, but still add that splash of color.

most places dont carry cherry shrimp in stock, however anywhere that sells fish can usually order them for you to come in wiht thier next batch of fish, there usually real cheap :)

sounds like its going to be a very nice tank

hers a good link if you want live plants :)
