Everything looks so yummy! I haven't even started canning yet...other than a few pints of pickled beets. Darned summer weather! Looks like my green beans are just about ready to start picking tho...so here we go!!
I know I went in the hole canning the peaches and blackberries since I had to buy the fruit. But, the tomatoes, cukes and potatoes were all from my backyard or free, so it evens out. Now, if I could just process my own sugar.
I still have corn to get in the freezer. I'm down to 2 dz. ears in the freezer. I'm waiting for the price to come down some. Tomatoes are still coming in good and I have about 6 gallon frozen in the freezer. Some friends said we could have their grapes, so I'm just waiting on them to call when they are ready. I think my bush beans will be ready in about a week, and my dad's a little after that.
I got 6 qts. of tomato sauce done yesterday. It's kind of like a "garden" tomato sauce. I threw in shredded zucchini, onion and sweet pepper. Helps to thicken it quite a bit.
I'm trying to build up a good stash of canning jars. DH and my sister brought in about 4 doz. asst. canning jars yesterday. I sent my sister home with veggies and jellies and sent some with DH to give to the guy he got the jars from.
It's so dry here. Our grass is crinkly brown. Dust just about flies up if you walk across it. We did get nice little shower yesterday and the weather looks good for one every day this week.
Now get this ya'll - I don't know if I mentioned this or not in my journal. A friend of DH's that makes a truck run to Tenn. stops in at DH's shop quite frequently. Last week, he mentioned that he was cleaning out his Grandmother's house. She had lots of canning stuff. He also mentioned that he took 15 or so cases of canning jars to the recycling center. He ended up giving them to a guy who works there.
DH mentioned that if he were just going to give the stuff away, we would use it. He said his Grandma used to have a pressure cooker that we could have if he found it. In the meantime, he sent up about 2 dz. asst. canning jars, so I sent him some veggies and canned goodies.
Earlier today, DH calls and said I need to fix a pretty "Thank You" card. I asked "What for?". He told me that since Gerald (truck driver) couldn't find his Grandma's canner, he bought me a brand new 16 qt. Presto Pressure Canner!
They are now on my Christmas Card list and Icicle Pickle list
DH mailed the "Thank You" card today. From what I understand, they are quite comfortable finacially. They have 2 homes, one on the lake. She works for a major chemical company in a very high ranking position. DH thinks Gerald (her DH) hauls wood just to have something to do. He says they seem to be great down to earth folk. Gerald his wife felt badly because they couldn't find the old canner, so she wouldn't have nothing more but to get me a new one. It's still a very nice gift and I assured them it would be put to good use.
I think I'll send them a quart of pickles and a tote I made.
Yesterday, we finally got a hard, soaking rain that we have been needing so badly. The rain gauge had 1 2/10" in it. I believe our brown grass has greened up overnight. It's raining again this morning.
That rain should be enough to bring the green beans in. My tomatoes have so much fruit on them that the limbs are breaking. Glad I got them picked before the rain started. The Brussels Sprouts that I planted for fall harvesting are looking good, too.
We walked out a dusk last night to chat with some neighbors who were walking with their kids. We looked up and saw about 1/2 dz. bats swooping overhead. We usually only see one or two. Glad they're there to keep the bug population down.
Well, I guess I'd better get started on more tomato sauce . . .
