You got some great deals, punkin! :thumbsup

I love making up the baskets at Christmas. I've used window box planters when I've found some at a good price that are nice to look at.
Kel, I don't know why I didn't think of this before. (smiley slaps forehead). I paid less for those baskets than for gift bags.

Send some of that rain my way would ya?

I always envoy all of you who get summer rains...we get nothing. May- Dec we are dry dry dry!

I love the idea of using baskets for your holiday gifts, much better to give soemthing that can be reused somehow :thumbsup
Dace, usually this is our dry time, too. I'd normally be watering the garden last of July and through August. Before this rain during the last 2-3 days, our yard was crunchy brown. Now, it will be a bear to mow. But, that's just more clippings for weed control in the garden. ;)

I love your pantry shelves. I am still whinning to DH about building me one. I showed him pics of yours trying to lite a fire. LOL
Wanda, just do what I did - set everything in the floor in his way. :D Or, say "I'll can some (whatever) when I have enough room." :D
That tactic won't work with mine. He will just step over, around or move it to a new location in my way. Promises to can something when I have room would only prompt him to box the canner up and put it in storage. LOL

I have to plant seeds over a few months time and then one day it
miraculously becomes his idea and he will draw an elaborate plan and ask me what I think. My reply will be WOW - what a great idea. Once he gets started there will be no stopping him until its a done deal. Until then I just cultivate and water the idea.

Saturday started out with a long chore list. I fixed bacon & eggs, cleaned the bathrooms and hung out 2 loads of laundry.

In the meantime, DH had some errands to run in town. Around 10:30 he called and said that our friend's grapes were ready. He came home and off we went to pick grapes. It was very easy picking, cause they had them on high arbors. She showed me her screened in porch. It used to be a double carport. What a great space it is. That would definitely be my canning/summer kitchen. We got the grapes picked and left about 1:30.

Came home and DH went up to the building. He noticed a strange smell. THE BREAKER TO THE 2 FREEZERS WE HAVE UP THERE HAD BEEN TURNED OFF!! :rant :somad It was the corn thawing that he smelled. I had 3 dz. ears of corn, 2 gallon baggies of okra, several containers of tomato juice and sauce, apple pie filling, sweet potatoes and pumpkin in there. I salvaged what I could and gave the chickens the rest (happy birds). I had just put 4 gallons of peeled and cored tomatoes in the other one. I'm making those into sauce this morning. I think DS's best friend may have been flipping breakers, cause a couple of days ago he mentioned the light flickering.

Anyway, got that freezer cleaned out (defrosted, too) and DH was moving it back into place with hand trucks. It got away from him and fell flat on the door. Now, the door is warped badly and will not close, much less seal properly. DH is OK, though. So now, I have to go shopping for a new freezer. I've got corn coming Wed. or Thurs. plus meat.

After getting that squared away, DH, DS and I all started mowing and bushhogging. DH also mowed my Aunt's yard. I got plenty of clipping for mulch in the garden.

Then after supper, we started separating grapes until about 10:30. We ended up with 7 gallons of fruit. We watched TV for a few minutes and then fell into bed.

POOR PUNKIN! :hit

I am so sorry about the food and especially the freezer! ... but so glad that no one was hurt!

Don't get rid of that freezer just yet however - especially if it is a chest freezer! My daughter has an old chest freezer with the compressor etc removed. It makes a GREAT safe grain bin or other storage unit. I have also seen old freezers turned into meat SMOKER cabinets or other useful Self Sufficient items.

It won't make it any less painful to have to buy a new freezer, but perhaps it can still be of use to you.

It may also be possible to fasten that warped lid to a stiffener such as a piece of plywood and straighten it out for a while at least.
:hugs

You mean there are other HUBBYs out there like mine?

Been married 28 years ... and I have just now gotten him gardening!

Nagging didn't work... probably delayed it several years!

Pleading didn't work. Quiet example didn't work.

His love of hot peppers? Now THAT got him snagged!

Year one - plant one hot pepper by front step so that he watched its progress each night coming home from work AND allowed him to harvest and solely EAT its peppers.

Year two - moved a single pepper into a big patio pot on same front porch and, after getting it started well, encourage him to be solely in charge of watering the poor thing. (Help it out only when very necessary)

Year three (where we are now!) - Three huge patio tubs with total of two Roma tomatoes and eight mixed hot peppers (that HE grew from seed!), a pot of cilantro (gotta have that in salsa!) and a few green onions interplanted. He comes home and checks the moisture levels (he bought a hygrometer!) and waters and tends them almost every night! He EVEN spent a day helping me mulch in my big garden this spring.

PS... I have also caught him recently talking to the chickens out of our bedroom window!

SNAGGED!

That freezer is about 21 years old. It's an upright. I'm thinking about laying it on its back on a short, raised table of some sort and putting it in the big greenhouse. I think it will make a great place for spinach, lettuce, etc. in the colder months. Of course, I'll have to drill some drainage holes in it, too.
