Today was a pretty good day. Ran a few critters to the auction, should get that check on Wednesday.

Tomorrow Ernie has his follow up appointment for his surgery. He has to get back x-rays to see if everything is healing OK and haven't moved. Means another 2 hour trip one way to Youngstown.

Wednesday, I have a lady coming to purchase some 6 week old pullets in the morning. Then Ernie starts his first session of PT at noon. Might be going to check out a You Pick Blueberry patch with Becky in the late afternoon/early evening, depending on what she finds out when she calls them.

Thursday and Friday I think we get to stay home, nothing to do except normal farm stuff and maybe work on that breeder pen (again and still...grr).

Then comes SATURDAY!!!!!!

Saturday we are getting a day "off" so to speak. We'll be getting up extra early to feed/water all the animals because we are going to a Family Farm Field Day!!!!!!!!

It counts as a homeschool field trip for the kids. It's in Holmes County. My mom is going with her family, too, so we're going to follow them over.

It's mostly geared to the Amish, so there will be a lot of non-power ideas being tossed around...meaning things that aren't run on electric ;) Which is totally awesome!!

There will be guest speakers and workshops and even kids stuff. The keynote speaker for the day????....................

JOEL SALATIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you read that Bee????????????? :gig I'll see if I can get his autograph for you!! :D ;)

Joel Salatin is going to be talking about What he sees coming in the future, "The positives of Family Farm Among the Negatives in 2009" and "Options for Small Acreage" (and the latter is the whole reason I want to go!)

Then Yoder Custom Meats is going to talk about the 2 ways to butcher pigs, which I'm super interested in since I'm hoping to get pigs soon.

This is the first year we'll be going to the Family Farm Field Day, so I'm super excited to go. It starts at 8:30 am and runs until 4 pm. We're hoping to spend the day out there. I'm sure there's lots to see and learn!

I'll be taking a lot of pictures and notes to share with ya'll!!!!!!!!!
Believe it or not, Aly, I've been to the Farm Field Day...and I loved it! It was several years ago and Joel was speaking there about rabbits. They had so many things to see and learn that I didn't want to leave. They had Heritage Animals in one tent, a cattle dog demonstration in another ring, llamas and alpacas and their yarns for sale in another......it was a wonderful show and one that I would do each year if I lived closer. It will definitely be a great day for you.....and I am eating my heart out right now in sheer envy! :duc The food is to die for.....grass fed beef BBQ, etc.

They even had a plowing with horses demonstration, a talk about ponds and how to keep them healthy (since you are going to own one, it would be nice if they had that again this year) and they had scads of stuff for the kids to do. They had a huge hay pile with prizes all in it and the kids got to dive in and search for prizes....it was fun to watch.

OMIGoodness, you guys I forgot all about what happened at the spring when we were getting water today.

There are these really pretty flowers (petunias) planted next to the spring. We always look at them while our 5 gallon containers are filling up.

Today, we found "Mary Jane" growing in the midst of the flowers!!!!!!! I kid you NOT!!

We honestly weren't sure if it was what we thought it was, but a local police officer came over the hill, so we flagged them down and showed them.

Yep, that's what it was!!!!!! :ep :th

There was about 5 plants growing there. We were so shocked. They were NOT there a week ago when we got our water, and it definitely wasn't an ordinary weed...I mean, it was a weed, just not one you expect to find....

So, not sure what the police are going to do, as they weren't too concerned, and the one officer was actually chuckling at us for not knowing what MJ looks likes  Whatever... :smack

Ok, now back to the whole "I'm going to meet (and get pics of) Joel Salatin"....

Sigh...and here I was excited to brag it up to you.....LOLOL

Well, I'm glad you've got to go! I'm fully looking forward to the opportunity. My mom's gone before, but I don't think Joel Salatin was a speaker at the previous one she'd been to? Only reason I say that is because she told me she's never heard of him.

When I read he was going to be the keynote speaker, Bee you were the first person who popped to my mind :gig

Yea, right??? Wish I could be a fly in their car when they stop...then again, maybe not???

It's right by a public highway, too, so not even close to hiding them...in plain view!!

Ernie said the best way to hide something is to put it in plain sight. :idunno

When my sister first moved to her property we were doing major cleaning and all the family was helping. When we got ready to go home my daughter went to get the "beautiful little fern" plant that she dug up.

You guessed it ... she found a mj plant! She was shocked when we told her that is what she had. :ep

A little Roundup took care of the problem.

The police were probably aware of them and were waiting for them to mature before harvesting.......for their own use!

In my home town, they elected a Sheriff Andy......yes, Andy. He was also one of the biggest pot heads while we were in school. I got so tickled to see the big pot bust story in the local paper....with a pic of Sheriff Andy standing in front of a smoking pile of MJ being burned. The irony of it was just too much...... :gig
