He's out in the pasture, and we tried to get him to come up to the barn (and I'll be trying again here in a few minutes). He's a bit scared.
He was really calm on the way home, but he's a total spaz now that he's in the pasture.
Tomorrow, fixing the gate so he can ONLY be in the holding pen until he's used to us.
Ok, here's the details............
Ernie, our friend R, and I all went to the auction this morning. I took 4 of those white leghorns and then we went inside to look at the large animals.
They had two Alpacas and two Llamas in one of the holding pens!!!
Ok, so yea, I'm so freaking excited because I've never seen Alpacas (or llamas for that matter) come through our local auction!!!
A friend of ours was there and Ernie started asking him if anyone there with a trailer would haul an Alpaca home if we bid on him. They said yes, someone would do that for us for about $30. Not bad, if you ask me. If our friend was heading home he would have done it for free, but he was heading to Wooster.
So, Ernie took the kids home with him and let me stay with R so we could "see how much they went for".
Anyway, my friend let me bid on them. I had the first bid at $20 and someone immediately said $25 and it kept going like that until the top bid (not mine) was $37.50. I was the second top bidder.
Well, I just knew I wasn't getting my Alpaca. Well, the top bidder took the black llama! And didn't want any of the rest. The auctioneer looks me straight in the eye and says, "Ma'am, what did you want?"
Now folks, I've been going to this auction long enough, these people know me. I must have had that look in my eye, because the whole time we were bidding I was giving the auctioneer "the look". I told him I wanted the smaller Alpaca, and then they went on to see if anyone else wanted anything.
They forgot to get my auction number! During the 30 seconds of chaotic chatter, my friend leans over and says, "What are you getting yours for?" and I said, "$37.50" and she said she wanted the other one, so I yelled over everyone (I do have a big mouth) "We want both Alpacas!"
So, for $75 we got 2 Alpacas!!!!!!!!! One for me, one for her! Both are intact males.
Now, if I can just get mine into the barn.
On the way home from the local grocery a few minutes ago, I was hit with the distinct impression that I'm supposed to call him Job, so I'm changing his name.
I'm heading back out to try again to get him to the barn. If I can't get him to come in, then I'm going to pray hard that nothing happens to him tonight. Llamas are good guard animals, but I don't think Alpacas are.
He is really beautiful!!!! <<<< Can't believe how cheap things go for at your auction!!!! Cheap calves and now this? Oh, you are sooooo lucky! I'd be haunting that auction every day!
So happy for you, Aly! Now......he needs a wife!
Pssssst! You will have him tamed down in no time with a few doses of sweet feed!
$37.50????? WOW!! That Harness is worth THAT much! What a beautifull guy he is. I am soooo glad I dont know where that auction house is. My hubby would definately blow a gasket! LOL
I thought he was going to blow when I got my dog this weekend! Just think if I came home with an Alpaca!! LOL Ohhhh, but I soooo want one!
I agree with BEe, a few handfulls of sweet feed, and he will be like putty in your hands!
OH, I almost forgot, we did NOT have someone haul them home for us...We hurried back to my friend's house, picked up her 15 passenger van and OMGoodness if ya'll could'a seen the Amish man's face when we pulled up to load up
Both Alpacas travelled well. They were a little nervous about getting IN the van, but once they were in, they laid down until we arrived at our destination.
And they are sooooo soft!!!!!!!!!
My Aunt has a spinning wheel....wonder if she'd be interested in selling it!
I can't get him to come into the holding pen. We've not had a lot of problems with Coyotes lately, so Ernie seems to feel he'll be OK for tonight.
I prayed really hard before I even started bidding on him, so I'm going to pray really hard tonight, too, that God keeps him safe for me until I get a gate fixed up tomorrow.
As for the wife thing, that's almost exactly what Ernie said! He said, "Now you just need to get a girl!"
eta: When the high bidder only took the llama, and the auctioneer gave me second choice, folks, I was so excited but in such a state of shock at the same time, I was shaking! I held my hands out to my friend and I said, "Look! Look how bad I'm shaking!" I couldn't stop shaking!!!
