Quail_Antwerp: Words from the Barnyard...

oh come on now.....you didn't want to keep a pair so you could have babies? Then you could have lotsa little piggies running around..... :lau:frow

Yep, two piggies gone, two piggies left, but we're thinking of putting the two males up on CL, too.

No, lori, I do not want to have a pair and end up with a bunch of babies running around...thought I did...but I'm gonna say that I was temporarily out of my mind.

I'm OK now, tho, and have seen the light.

Beef's the new pork, baby! :P

Sorry it didn't work out the way you had hoped. Glad you are down to only 2 now.

meh, it's alright, TTs Chicks. I can say I tried my hand at raising a pig....or 4.... even if it was only for a month.

I think if we work out a better set up, next time - if there is a next time - will be better.

Talked with my kids' 4-H director about those two pigs that are left, and she said they'd make good 4-H pigs for someone, so we're going to advertise the other two as possible 4-H projects to the locals.

We'll make some kid happy, we'll be happy, and the pigs will still get ate. Win win.

The duck hatch is still going on. I had 7 hatch out of nine eggs that made it to the end out of the eggs I had set. One duck expired shortly after hatch, there was something just not right, so I ended up with 6 ducklings from the eggs I set.

Becca had set some eggs, and they were supposed to go into lock down on Sunday, but she's gone for a wedding, so we carefully packed up the duck eggs and moved them to my 'bator Sunday evening.

The ducks started to hatch on Monday. One fully hatched by I think Monday afternoon/evening, and we've had five hatch out today. We're up to 12 ducklings! We have 3 more eggs in the 'bator, 1 of which I'm pretty sure is dead, and 1 zipping and the last one is pipped.

My DD is excited, as she's picking 2 of these ducks for her 4-H pet duck project. We're planning to keep all of the females, soon as we know which ones they are, for our egg laying duck flock. We've already found a possible buyer for some of the males once they're mostly raised up for meat ducks.

whoot!

Ducks are waaaaaaaaaay easier than pigs!

No fair! My duck isn't even laying yet and you've already got babies! My dh is wanting to raise babies out of the two gilts I got in Oct, but I am afraid that we will have problems with them getting loose too. And the 4-h would be great! BTW do you know how to tell the females duck babies from the males when they are little? It is really easy if you don't.

Isn't it by their quacks? Males are a little more raspy and don't quack as loudly?

Well, ducks are kinda like pigs with feathers.... :gig

Yeah, the quack gives them away.

It is even easier for me to tell...
With Welsh Harlequins for the first few days after hatching, girls have PINK BILLS! Can't get much easier than that!!!

Congrats on the ducklings!
DH wants to put the kids in 4-H so I'm thinking ducks and turkeys! :D Where would you get them from if you were just starting out and didn't know anyone to buy from? Meyer? I would love to take a trip up there sometime. I'm not even sure if we are early enough to get started for 4-H, I have no idea of the requirements yet.
