No, more like roughly a months worth.

My friend called and left several messages today, in a panic because her goat was giving birth and she's at work.

I think I'm heartless, because I felt she was over reacting.

Her kids didn't have school today, so she had a couple teens home that I feel are perfectly able to go down and move the goaties to the barn. And take a towel to dry them off.

She was upset with her husband because he refused to leave work early to care for the goats. Her last message (she left five) on my machine she was almost in tears.

We had been over at BeccaOh's feeding and watering all of her critters because she's out of town for a wedding.

:hide I must admit, my first thought when I got the messages were, "Why didn't you move your preggers goat to the barn?" No, I didn't say that to her, but this is the second time that the goat has delivered. The first time, last year, I did run over the hill and make sure Mama and babies were OK, but we didn't have 3 feet of snow on the ground and NO ONE was home that time.

Am I a bad friend?

Aly, Did she call her teens and ask them to do what you said? Perhaps you could call them see what they have done and then reassess the situation. I know kids, teens especially are more inclined to do what someone other than their parents ask of them. Maybe if you speak with the teens yourself they will respond better.

Then decide if you need to go.

Just my .02

The teens were doing it. The teens had gone out to feed/water the goats. The teens called her at work and said, "We think the goat is in labor, what do you want us to do?" The teens were on it. They were handling it. She told them to take towels down and dry them off, but because she couldn't get them on the phone - probably because they were outside taking care of the goats. So, the whole time the teens are handling the goat situation, she's leaving upteen messages on my machine.

I am not sure why she was panicking, but she was.

Anyway, their dad will be home in 30 minutes, so I'm sure everything will be fine.

BTW, the goat had one baby and was already passing the afterbirth by the time I got to talk to my friend.

My sheep had their lambs with no human assistance--no drying them of or nothing. I'm just sayin'.....
My Nubian/boer cross goat did, too. We didn't even know she was in labor, just went out one morning and there was Mama in the barn with a new baby.

I'm wondering when did we stop letting nature do its work?

I like FF''s suggestion about training your pigs...is that possible?
Absolutely :)

We trained our pigs to follow a target (a tennis ball on a broomstick) when we had them as kids... it's a lot easier for moving them if they will just trot along beside you. It's WAY easier if you start immediately when you get a tiny piglet.

This guys a little irritating, but he has a pig as an example in his how to training video :)
