Thanks for the links, keljonma! With everything going on with my hubby, I hadn't given anymore thoughts to an Alpaca. Mostly been concentrating on the chickerdoodles.

Monroe and Elizabeth are going to move into their "love abode" tomorrow and I'm hoping Monroe lays it on thick and Elizabeth starts popping out some brown cackle berries. :) I picked up layer and scratch today. My mom can feed nothing but scratch, and gets 14 eggs a day! I told E I need to add some crumbles I think, because I'm getting nada! So, now that I'm adding some crumbles, I hope I'll get the occassional egg soon! I'd be happy with 1 or 2 a day

I posted this in the other thread on my hubby:"E" has a Dr. Appointment tomorrow at 3pm. After his appt with his Dr. he has an MRI scheduled for 4:30pm. They are moving it along faster than originally anticipated because he is now having some other issues caused by the back issues.

Thank you everyone for the prayers and good wishes.

Yes, I noticed you've got chickenitis ... but it looks like everthing on that angle is working well. I just thought the article was pretty interesting. I've never thought about owning either animal, so never realized they would have teeth issues. :D

We're feeding Purina FlockRaiser, rolled oats & black oil sunflower seeds, and supplying oyster shell and grit. The Flock Raiser is 20% protein (as opposed to 16% for most layer feeds). We also give them mixed grains as scratch once a day. (okay, I'm talking their regular feed rations - not the other stuff (like yogurt) our spoiled flock gets as well.)

I read that sunflower seeds and oats fed in equal portions together make a very balanced ration for poultry, and sunflower seeds are said to increase laying power. I know that our flock does well on this blend especially during molt. As a side note, we have not seen any evidence of live worms in the droppings.

The green stems and leaves are said to be good forage for the flock. And the dry stems and empty seed heads can be used as litter. But I have not had any success growing sunflowers in the past 3 years, so I am not sure whether our flock would enjoy these or not.

Good luck tomorrow! We're still praying!

That gets that word of mouth out.....make sure you have business cards made for yourself. Those get passed around and next thing ya know you got orders!

I'd actually named her for my mom. Unfortunately, she passed away this afternoon.

Hmm hadn't thought of business cards, but the feedstore owner sends everyone who comes asking for chickens out my way LOL Last year I had to turn people away, as I was just starting out myself and I refused to sell my parent stock. This year, I am hoping the people come back. They were 4-H families looking for specific chickens. I happen to have what they wanted. :)

keljonma, I've added oats to the chickens feed mix, but not sunflower seeds. I'll check into getting the black sunflower seeds. I am not worried about not getting eggs until spring, but I want to make sure my chickerdoodles are getting enough nutrients so that they will lay come spring! Soon as I get those first eggs from Elizabeth I'll have to take pics of them, and post them!
