Yes, Ohio has laws that allow sales of home baked good if they are identified as home produced.

Wow, that's great. I would love to do that. I have a great pie recipie you should try. Not fruit more like pecan with some other goodies. It's always a winner.

So I've been neglecting my journal, mostly because 1 - I don't think anyone really reads it much anymore and 2 - haven't really had anything I wanted to share on here.

but, I didn't want to hijack Lady H's journal, so I thought I'd post my thoughts regarding self sufficiency here, and everyone can take it or leave it :)

I first want to admit to being REALLY ENVIOUS of people who live in populated areas, where there are stores and fast food restaraunts and hospitals close by and businesses - because in my minds eye, living where there are those types of things = jobs! Ideally, I'd like to have a home with a big back yard and a neighbor (or two) but still be able to walk or bike to work.

Where I live now - no jobs. Not even in the little towns 5 miles from me. The same people have held the same positions for years, and there's not much of a revolving door at these little business.

We just had a Dollar Store open up locally - I was thrilled! and seriously thinking of applying for work there after I have baby girl and have healed from my c-section.

It always strikes me funny that people in this economy would goof off and mess up their jobs and get fired. Or just walk away from a job.

I know on the other side of the coin, there are people who wish they had what we have. The land that's paid for, the time to work the garden, the time to tend the animals, the time to do any necessary repairs. But time doesn't always pay the bills or cover personal expenses like shoes for kids to go to school or car repairs or if the car's transmission completely goes out, money to buy another vehicle.

There's pros and cons to every situation that a person is in.

I'm in Denver. No jobs here. *sighs*

But I agree: the grass is always greener on the other side, and there are pros and cons.

I'm looking forward to getting to northern CO to try and get a bit more bonus on both sides. More room to garden. I'll still have my job (it travels, I work from home at a call center), and can job hunt there as well, see if they are hiring any more than Denver is. Plus, most of our friends up there are on farms or have a good chunk of land and I can work in exchange for fresh eggs and produce.

First- I read you! I'm sure lots of other people do too, even if they don't always post.

Second- Good luck with the job searching, but it's not that much easier in towns or cities. More jobs might be available, but you have many more people applying for them. I'm starting to think that making a practical, needed or handy product is much more likely to create reliable income- than working for other people ever will.
Maybe you need some fresh eyes to see what resources you have available nearby and suggest what could be done with those. This is not any criticism, I was just worried that you might be discouraged and not notice some opportunity because of it.

yea Aly we all have to make due with what we have and the town we live.

I was very country....now over the last 15 yrs and explosion of stores, and yup, no jobs in those but lucky I have to say our area has jobs, some good corps etc......not what people are accustomed to making if they left a good paying job, but there is work and money is necessary to function.

like you said, why any would walk away from a good job now is just crazy...but at Tony's job a few men have done that...and they have families with kids?? I just dno't get it lol----why would anyone give away good jobs or hard earned income unless needed as an emergency? WHO knows how everyone thinks?

but as much as we are envious of one thing, we should be grateful for what we have and how we do live our lives as we see it.

hang in there gal, good and prosperous times are coming but when? lol, not soon, but they will LOL

Yours is one that I always read - I very rarely post anything but that's just me.
