Sorry for being so silent on this study, but I had to catch up :)
Verse 1 stands up and screams to me, as well as verse 7. The reminder to stand fast in the liberty given us by Christ is as much needed in this day and time when so much emphasis is put on what we do as opposed to the condition of our soul, but also what we don't do or shouldn't do. Do you know what I mean?

Verse 7 is a question that we need to pose to ourselves whenever we look away from faith and back to works. It is so easy to get caught up in servitude that we are just busy all the time. It's like we are trying to earn our way to heaven. It's like Paul is saying you were on the right track! What happened? Why do you want to go back to the Law? Don't give in to the peer pressure, Christ is all you need.

BTW-I love Ecclesiastes!

It took me a while to catch up too. :)

"Don't give in to the peer pressure, Christ is all you need." - sheaviance1

And boy is peer pressure still out there.

We went to a certain church when my kids were young. At first it was great. Then the pastor who was elderly began to show his age. At first it was just some repeating of verses while he was preaching, but it got worse. He was a good man, but just could not do it anymore, so the assistant pastor started taking up the slack.

Suddenly we were back to the Law. This guy was all about what you couldn't do, shouldn't do and seemed to forget that as Christians we are now FREE. We try and do the right things because of LOVE. To please our LORD - not to gain heaven or something. It got worse. When that guy started making statements about how people dress when you go to church, like a person in jeans or some other thing was not following God. We got out.

Others stayed. They kept listening without rebuking that man for his wrong teachings. There were many that should have been stopping that legalism - people that knew what he was teaching was wrong - but they did nothing. Most had attended that church for a long time and what would others think. Because of the peer pressure they decided to live by the Law.

That was only the beginnings of that churches problems. Since then there have been many Laws broken there - man's as well as God's.

Thank GOD that I am saved by Grace.

For me, this chapter ties in w/some other verses, can't remember where they are found. But, Jesus is talking about the greatest commandment. And He says it's to love the Lord your God, the 2nd is like it, to love your neighbor as yourself. In Romans, it says to owe no man anything but to love one another, and 1 Corinthians 13 talks about doing all kinds of works w/out love.

If we love God and our fellow man, we're going to try and live a life that is both pleasing to God, and helpful to our fellow man. Any works that are done will not be done to try and garner favor w/God, but to glorify God. Hope this makes sense.
