hahaha. Yeah, I felt like the worst Mormon ever last year when I couldn't get my zucchini to grow! A friend generously let me harvest her garden when she spent 3 months away from home to tend to her dying mother.
Zucchini us just so darn versatile, I can't help wanting to plant it. Raw, steamed, in sauces, soups, breads, cookies...my dh tells me I can hide zucchini in anything.
Orange marmalade time again! I wanted to try it with honey to see if it would taste good. (dh thought I was trying "to be all healthy" ) It was good, but next time I will use less honey, and more juice instead of water and maybe larger pieces of peel, I just used zest this time. The honey flavor seemed overpowering. Dh liked it, but as I explained it to him, its supposed to be marmalade, not orange jam. I need to use up the oranges as the tree is in bloom right now and would probably appreciate a lightening of its load.
Planted 6 tomato plants. Dh planted some old herb seeds. We'll see if anything comes up.
Cleaned the chicken coop, made a brick border around the new persimmon and pomegranate "trees" which were bare root, but leafing out nicely, did the grocery shopping, taught the kids, did some laundry, and now there is nothing good on tv. Guess I'll go read my book.
I am beat. Played dodgeball with 30 kids for an hour today. Came home and planted some squash - in the front yard! Took some nice compost from the pile, so those plants shoud be happy. Then mowed the backyard. Whew. Tomorrow I'll have to mow the front yard and edge. Dh mows 99.9% of the time, but has been really busy lately, so I volunteered to do it for him.
Yesterday I layed on the beach for 4 hours, so I guess I deserved the workout.
My cheesemaking supplies arrived! I am so excited to try it out. My mom said she is buying me a cheesemaking book. Maybe she doesn't trust my recipe that I got from a stranger on the internet. Thanks, Blackbird!
Also bought a bottle of kefir at Trader Joes. I am still deciding what to do with it.
woo hoo! Free veggies! Took the kids to help out at a friend's community garden plot. Kids got to use a hand saw, they were awesome! A neighboring gardener came over to chat and the next thing I know, I have about 12 tomato starts, 3 cucumbers, 2 peppers, a clump of butter lettuce and a clump of cauliflower seedlings, and 4 big, beautiful beets ready to eat.
Loving the kefir- I even like it plain. Kids will drink it in smoothies with lots of fruit.
I also discovered I can buy raw, whole, organic milk from grass-fed cows in the grocery store! I gulped at the price ($8 for 1/2 gallon!) and let my kids try it. They absolutely love it! I found out the seller, Organic Pastures, has a booth at the local Farmer's Market on Saturdays where they sell it for only $7 per half gallon. I am trying to cut back on our food budget in other places so we can afford it. Been doing a lot of home cooking lately. Beans and rice are going to figure more frequently in our menu. But we're going to have a nice garden this year, and the chickens are laying like crazy, so it will all work out.
cousin-in-law gave me a sourdough start and lent me her sd book, but I've been too intimidated to try it out. I hope I didn't kill it or anything.
I can't believe it! We're getting a community garden plot! **happy dance of joy!***
I put our name on the list last fall, and as of March we were about #25 on the waiting list, but I just got a call!!! I go in tomorrow to sign the paperwork, pay, and get my key and plot #.
The kids are so excited. Our yard/house is on .1 acre, and though we produce a lot on it, this will be awesome for things that need a lot of space. We are going to plant corn, pumpkins, spaghetti squash, I don't know what else. Dd wants to plant potatoes.
I can't wait to see what the plot looks like. It could be a square of dirt, or it may have raised beds or other things done by previous owners. The city supplies water.
