One thing I learned with some public schools, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Keep pushing and pushing for your child.

I was a teacher for 15 years in the private sector, and 2 years in the public Magnet Montessori school. My own daughter had learning issues, I still had to push and push to get her tested for different things...even when I worked @ the school! Same with her doctors, they ran when they saw me!! :p

It isn't easy, but don't give up!! :hugs

Good for you, Tankshill! Glad to hear your kids are scheduled for allergy testing. It is amazing to me what a parent has to do to advocate for their children. In fact, rather than hijacking here, I will start up the old ADD thread. Best wishes to you and so glad that you may be closer to getting some answers.

Hey Gina, not sure if I have shared this but we had my 16 yr old tested for celiacs....long story but she was negative.

She has always been thin (she is 5' 6 1/2 and weighs in at 98lbs) I have gotten calls from nurses, counselors and teachers asking if she has an eating disorder. Finally I came to a point of extreme concern when she had not gained any weight in nearly 2 yrs. Keep in mind that all my children are very slender as have DH & I always been...until we hit our 40s! So a skinny kid is not an unusual sight around here and her older sister's weight also brought calls from the school although not to the same degree.

Anyway.....they tested her for everything under the sun, took what seemed like GALLONS of blood from the child. Negative for everything. Then I started reading about food sensitivities.....which will not show up in testing. We put her on an elimination diet (that was tough!) and after two weeks she ate an egg fried in butter for breakfast and mashed potatoes at a friends house with sour cream, butter, milk and cheese in them. She got sick as a dog.

Affter that she started to be more careful about dairy. It can be very hard to pinpoint the trigger too, because for her she can eat a lot of dairy but once in a while too much, or the wrong combination seems to throw her into a migraine.

I think that all of my kids and my husband seem to have some food sensitivities and I really need to put more effort into figuring them all out. I know they would all be happier and healthier. But trying to get everyone to go on an elimination diet and keep a food journal is near impossible!

Thanks Dace. Yes I remember you saying something about this before. I am going to go through the allergy testing and wait to see what my sil results are. Then go on from there. her genetic testing will be proof enough if I run into any obstacles.

The school thing is another ball of wax. :idunno

I am just going to take one day at a time.

Ok so I was going through my journal and deleting some personal stuff I probably should never have whined about in the first place. But while doing it I found something interesting.

Last year I made laundry soap for the first time.
I used my pressure canner for the first time.
I grew potatoes in wire for the first time.
I made my own cold frame
I planted 7 fruit trees

And lots of other cool SS stuff. Maybe I will keep a journal at home. I could even use a pen and write it on paper. Wouldn't that be a novel idea.

The plot thickens. ADHD is also linked to Celiacs? I've been trying to get DH to the dr since Wolf-kim's post about gray hair & celiac. I'm starting a discussion about it, I need more info to beat the man over the head with, oops... I mean gently put it in his hands, lol.

That experience is a clear answer. But it could be several things, not necessarily dairy....but most likely. That meal would put me in bed....if I ever got off the toilet! :sick Unless it is RAW milk, no problems for me. I can also tolerate commercial butter, since almost all the lactose is in the whey.

You might consider having a family pow-wow and putting everyone on an elimination diet together. Plan the two-week menu in advance and include a LOT of really yummy and special foods, and do a lot of advance prep so that it is possible to stay on it. Make it special! Food at my house is SOOOO much more delicious than anything I can get elsewhere, pretty much. Really, it is doable. But you can't do all that work unless everyone agrees to cooperate. Sounds like they are all old enough to keep their own journals, which can be done before anyone leaves the breaksfast-lunch-dinner table or goes to bed.

DH must be convinced that as a dad, he must help with this for the sake of his children's health and well-being. It needs to be a family project, not just you doing this: :he

Pharmaceuticals will be offered but are not the answer.....long-term irritation will lead to serious health issues later in life. Now is the time.

Sorry, preachy, but this is my life! I tend to be like an ex-smoker when it comes to food-related health issues!!! :old
