I suspect everyone, like me, is waiting for someone who knows the answer!
So I'll start. I have no clue. I think, from a quick glance down that google list, that I'd probably do some serious dehydrating of the white sapote. Also a little experimenting, but it sounds like it is not worth the bother of cooking them. Might make nice dried chips, or maybe mixed with something else (apples?) they'd make a nice fruit leather.
As for the nuts....whoa, baby! Get as many as you can. Someone can tell you how to husk them and dry them. I've only dealt with wild hazel nuts. We would pick 'em, husk 'em right away by putting them in a sack and beating the sack on the road, then you spread the nuts out to dry where vermin can't get them. Kids would be seen selling them by the roadside....they'd hold up a drinking glass of nuts as each car went by. We also got in trouble in school for carrying pocketfuls around and cracking them with our teeth all day long.
You could make trail mix with white sapote chips and macadamia nuts!
You could sell a lot of the nuts, too, and use the money for another ss project. I do this type of thing a lot. Bought the pigs with egg money, and built their house, too.
Thanks Free. I know the fruit is pretty unusual and most people are probably not familiar with it. Dehydrating sounds like a good idea. I only have 1 of those leather plastics though. I guess I could do a sample batch and order more if necessary. I have about 6 of the Sapote on my counter. When they ripen I will try out some recipes.
I think the macadamia nuts will be a bit of a challenge but worth it. I just need to put my mind to it and get going. I just need to research proper picking time.
I haven't made fruit leather, but have cut parchment paper to fit my dehydrator for other things and it worked great. You might give that a try. It has a shiny side that should keep the fruit from sticking.
My husband just called. He is on his way home from the office. He has an hour and 30 minute drive. He said his Uncle who happens to work for the same company has decided to get out of Dodge. Not sure when it's going to happen but he might be heading for MO. Dang, he better not buy the farm I want.
The only reason I am sharing because I think this works in my favor. Mwhhahahahaha (is that how you say it?) Goes to show I am not the only one who thinks moving is a good idea.
Ok so here's the deal. Yesterday I got reallllllly frustrated with my 3 kids, house and chores. So in a fit of frustration and tears I called and cancelled our DirecTV service.
They way over charge us. I have called several time in the past year asking how and if we could reduce the bill. I get really angry because they give me the line "you have been a valued customer for 10 years" but won't cut the fees. They do however give new customers service at a rate 50 bucks less per month than what I pay.
That does not cut it. So I canceled.
DH gave the line that if we cut the tv we should cut the Internet as well. Not going to happen. We need it for banking and school and mostly contact with MY outside world. But I am going to try to stay off during the day. Maybe check stuff in the early AM before the kids get up. So don't worry I am sill here just trying to cut back.
I received that book on root cellaring that I ordered from Amazon yesterday. I have already managed to skim the whole thing. I now know there is a difference between your canning cupboard and your veggie storage. Never really knew about the humidity part before.
I went out in the garden this am. Pulled out all the non productive tomatoes, squash, green beans and such. I shoveled and loaded a ton of composted manure into the boxes. Now I think the chickens are out there mixing it in for me. I want to try and get some of those storage and fall crops in. I know I am a few weeks late but this is So Cal.
I never got to my sewing so maybe I can start on that this weekend.
Sat is the 18th right? It is my 11th year wedding anniversary. I don't plan to do anything special. Just a nice day with the family will be great.
Good deal on the cable. I had to walk my mom through ordering direct tv a few months ago and I learned that I do not ever want to deal with tv providers. I have the same beef on cell phone companies tho. The new customers always get the better deals.
To make my leathers, I use either parchment paper (the shiney side like free said) or plastic wrap. Once they've dried enough to handle, you can stick em straight on the regular trays.
