We're going to sister L's for Thanksgiving.

I'm bringing salad and green beans, onions & bacon. Sister C is bringing 2 side dishes, probably one of them her sausage cornbread dressing. Sister L's dh is making turkey and roast pork. I think sister L is making red velvet cheesecake.

since i'm confessing today.....

you may remember last we had tday dinner with my MIL who served everything from costco and cried at the table. it was horrible and we raced home to be with our Good Neighbors who always include us like family.

this year i've decided it would be in EVERYONE's best interest if we did tday with my family (trade years - its only fair right?). so thats what we told MIL

here's the kicker - my family isnt even going to be around.

you heard me - we are going to hide in our own house and have nachos. but we'll still go over to the Good Neighbors after they have their family event.

ha!

but there will be pie, thats for sure.

Very sneaky ! I hadn't even thought about what I'll make for it yet. Thanks for the reminder.
I just called the store and asked them to special order my Quorn "turkey loaf". It's one of the few substitutes I will eat, and it's actually good.

The meal will either be here or my parents' house across town. I will probably do the turkey again this year. I used Cook's Country's directions for "barding". We will have a CSA heritage bird again. Sides my mom insists on: Mashed potatoes. I will do those with goat's milk so DS can have them. Not sure about bread yet. Mom usually does store bought brown-n serve rolls. :sick I've been making homemade rolls but can't eat them. I might do them anyway. My brother will bring the Great Vat of Salad. I will have to make a homemade GF salad dressing.... Mom will do baked sweet potatoes and a green veggie of some sort. I'd do Brussels Sprouts with horseradish sauce but she will probably do green beans or broccoli. We bougt two pies from DS's school fund raiser. It's just the immediate family. I have no one to impress! DS and I can't eat them. I've got GF pie crust mix from Breads From Anna. I'll make a pumpkin pie with that because I have to have pumpkin pie. Have to! Mom will do the dressing however she wants, probably from a bag.... again, I can't eat it so what am I gonna say? :duc
LOL. I can't say I'm not going to eat a little gluten laden food though. It's only once a year!

Wow. Every region and every family has different traditions.

We always have:
turkey stuffed with homemade bread dressing
mashed potatoes and gravy
canned cranberry sauce
brussel sprouts
peas
candied yams
creamed onions
and homemade pumpkin pie for dessert

sometimes we splurge and have mincemeat pie, but those jars of mincemeat are SO expensive, and I'm the one that loves it the best, and I certainly don't NEED the pie.
Murphys, my family likes mincemeat pie, but I agree with you about the cost of the bought stuff. I make my own (vegetarian) mincemeat from a recipe that uses green tomatoes, apples and pears. I make a big batch when I have lots of green tomatoes, and can it for the years when I don't. Let me know if you want the recipe.
This year DH and I will be on our own for Thanksgiving, so we're thinking of doing something completely different. At the moment we have settled on roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, with some sort of vegetable and salad. But that may change. And probably pumpkin pie, because I love it.

2 dinners

one at my Moms and I just found out brothers can't come--they are flying in for Christmas instead-----so with just my parents and Tony and Nicole----we are having a small turkey, mashed taters, gravy, stuffing I love my Mom makes, cranberry, corn, green beans, and sweet taters---then the old pie for dessert--probably pumpkin and cherry

then for my Thanksgiving with his parents---they are either coming here for like a steak dinner on the grill (his parents don't like turkey) or we are going out to a restaurant....probably restaurant cause I don't want dishes haha

Oooh! I forgot, we were invited to dessert and games at our priest and his wife's house after dinner so we're all arranging our dinner times to do that. She is GF also so we're sure to have some yummy treats! There will be 6 adults plus their college aged boys and our DS. My parents are invited to but we will see if my dad is up to it. There's another couple from church coming and they are even older than my parents. So who knows? Dad may just decide to do it.
MIL doesn't eat turkey, has never invited us for dinner. DH's aunt used to do the huge 20 person + dinner with 39 dishes, etc. She hasn't been up to it for years and I can't say I miss that insanity. We do small and close to home much better! I putter around cooking all morning while watching the parade on TV.... love it!!

I cook the turkey the night before and then put it in the slow cooker in mushroom gravy. This way I am not fussing and cooking on the big day, just enjoying with my man.

I make low carb stuffing out of cubed squash, diced veggies and almond meal. That gets baked in a casserole dish. I make that the day before too so it is ready to pop in the oven.

I also make a low carb cauliflower and cheese dish, make a salad, put out a cheese and veggie platter, make deviled duck eggs, and then dessert is a low carb pumpkin cheese cake.

No relatives live anywhere near us :woot so it is me and hubby and Max. Oldest son is in Iraq. So we get a quiet day at home in our jammies with football on tv and the Wii set up for half time or in case of ridiculous blow out. Lots of snuggling, maybe a few mixed drinks. Good food.

I love Thanksgiving :love
