OGG, thanks for sharing. All this garden talk is getting me anxious for Spring. I actually had to go to my date planner and right into the 2nd week of March "DO NOT PLANT ANY SEEDS INDOORS BEFORE THIS DATE"..... :)

Okay, here's a question - has anyone had any success in container-raised onions? My soil, even after years of amendments, is still too clay-heavy for good onions because of the poor drainage when things are too wet, and slow growth when the soil gets stiff.

I was thinking about trying containers?

That's probably what I am going to do this year too. We have red clay soil and it is EVERYWHERE! Okra loves it though

I've tried raised beds without much success.

Any thoughts on the containers? I have a bunch of scrap lumber and I was thinking of 8" by 3' by 8" tray boxes.

Jamie that'd be good for things that NEED good drainage. That is what I will be putting in containers. Everything that will tolerate my soil is going directly in the soil.

I can't "outgrow" you and James, if I leave things as they have been!

You can't anyway ;)

Seriously, I have to adjust my way of growing here too, so I know what you're talking about. I just have poor soil structure, and hope to make it better and produce a lot of food this year.

One thing that seems to grow fine here is red beets - my space allocation usually dedicated to Peas, green beans, and carrots in going into nothing but red beets this year.
