Wow. I know everyone is entitled to their opinions, but this is a bit much. This is a self sufficent forum and many of the people that frequent this forum you would more than likely consider "hicks". I could go on for days telling you and others what I think about this remark and other comments made here, but I will not. This forum is about self sufficent living and not about stereo typing people, hicks or "people" like you. If the original poster to this topic does not wish to live in a "rural" area, this is what they should have said. The term "hicks"??? How rude.

I'm sorry if I offended anyone. I didn't realize that the term Hick is a derogatory term. I looked it up and it is indeed a derogatory term. Being a progressive I like to be PC. I also don't want to offend anyone. So I will not use the term hick anymore.

To the OP. I would like to amend my original statement and delete Hick. Hick is not the correct term. The correct term is conservative and they are not related to hicks. The country would be a sad place if we all had the same values and thoughts.

Y'know what? I'm proud to be a hick. I'm a farmer from a long line of farmers and we were all hicks. Well educated hicks, but hicks nevertheless and I'll tell you something else. If you really want to get me riled you come onto MY property and start spouting off about your beliefs about politics, religion or whatever. When we put up an Obama sign we seriously feared for the safety of our livestock but a couple of our neighbors thanked us for letting us know they were not alone. Some people came to my door selling their particular brand of religion and saw the pentacle on my door-another worrisome moment as I really don't want my children to be ostracized in school for their mother's beliefs. So you may be offended because you CHOOSE to be offended but Big Daddy did not attack anyone in particular and his joke was funny because it's bloody true for a lot of us.
Now go ahead and kick ME off the forum.

Much intolerance is couched in humor. That is how it is gets validated. Those with what are considered traditional values are frequently the targets of intolerance, yet because it is done with a laugh it isn't considered harmful.

And another thing (when the Irish Amazon gets pissed, she's evil) I noticed that the OPs use of the word "hick" was simply passed over but when Big Daddy, the rabble rousing, opinionated, LIBERAL, uses it all hell breaks loose and everyone gets to rain down complaints about his picking on them. I was not only talking about Big Daddy's comments,....I refered to the other comments also.

I wasn't really correcting myself. I was simply apologizing,if you met the requirements listed and didn't like being called a hick. The requirements listed really apply more directly to conservatives. However there are a lot of conservative hicks. If you look at a map of red vs blue states you will find that all the states that are commonly labeled as having an abundance of hicks are indeed red states. That is not an insult in any way it is simply a fact. We live in a rural area of Colorado and you could label us hicks. It doesn't offend me in the least. However I am not thin skinned. I have been called far worse.
