The topic needs to be returned to real quick.
I am sure the OP doesn't appreciate the derailment of his thread.
And I am sure the people whom fequent this forum did not appreciate the OP's comments about uneducated "hicks".

Back to the topic OP. I have spent at least a few weeks in every state except Hawaii and Alaska. I've worked in them and gotten to know some of the locals. It's been my experience that the nice parts of the country are expensive. The less desirable parts are much less expensive. There are enclaves where the country is beautiful but they are under developed with a lot of poverty. The area where you mentioned and interest are all pretty expensive. High taxes and generally high cost of living. Like I said before, that house in upstate NY sounds nice. If the people don't share your political beliefs you can just educate them. Maybe they will see the light and it will increase your good karma. Besides, the snow is fun. Gives you an excuse not to go to work. You just call the boss and say the plow hasn't come through and you can't get to the main road.

Good luck.

:pop All I gotta do is mention the "h" word to get an entertaining thread going. :duc

Sorry about that folks. I didn't mean to offend anyone.

I really need to start a list here with pros and cons of every state that has been mentioned and then do some traveling! :weee

The correct term is conservative
Ok...so your problem isn't with people of the "h" word...but with the "c" word?

That's interesting.

Especially when you consider the name of this forum: sufficientSELF.com

Many on here (and likely you too) CONSERVE various things....food, money, etc.

Monterey, VA. Beautiful, small town feel with an artsy contingent of democrats from down out of Washington, D.C. The land is beautiful and fertile, not too far away from larger cities. Not sure about the job situation for your hubby's skills but the land and taxes are definitely cheaper than what you are paying now.

I would venture that anywhere in the country is going to give you some exposure to hicks....this is their native territory after all...but you can often find someone of similar values if you look hard enough.

I'm still looking where I live.......not been too successful around here. :p
ETA: I am a dyed in the wool hick from way back....so I figure it's okay for me to use this term. Sorry if this offended anyone. I'm rather proud to be known as a hick! :D As you probably know, there are many degrees of "hick" in the spectrum....I don't necessarily equate conservatism with hick. ;)

If the opposite of hick is liberal, Democrat and supposedly "educated".....then I is a hick!

Sorry....back to the OP. :)

Yeah...me too!

Except I'm an educated "hick"....and an educated conservative.

And yep! educated-conservative-hicks do exist. ;)

Around here, most of the so-called hicks are Dems! :D They don't necessarily like a black man running the country( I know...it still exists  ), but their family have always been democrats, so they simply HAD to vote Democrat.

So funny to live in the country....such a rich and varied life. :love

This has nothing to do with politics or anything else. The point is that it is a derogatory term and it should have never been used in that context here on this forum or BYC. All the OP should have said is that they did not prefer to live in a rural area.
