I save the bags in the cereal boxes that hold the cereal, rinse them off, and wrap my sandwiches in them. No idea whether they've got plastic in them, but they ARE sufficiently cheap!

I just thought of something, if you want a sandwhich, wrap it in a giant tortillia! :D

I had a little 15 person harvest party last night

All the bowls (I made tortilla soup and mexican style pork shoulder eaten with tortillas) were stoneware, spoons were real ss spoons. The margaritas were served in all glass glasses. I rinsed each spoon and bowl to put in the (EEK!) plastic dishwasher, or I quickly hand washed them to be used again. I was proud of myself.

I did use paper napkins and paper plates for the rice and beans etc. Most of my guests remembered to put their paper plates in the recycling bag, the rest I picked out of the tiny trash can I keep under the sink.

We ended up not even filling up my kitchen trash can which is only about 10 gallons deep. :thumbsup

Oh, I also have a nice brown glass tequila bottle to fill with water for the fridge now! (Not as pretty as the blue sky bottles, but it will do.)

My next goal is to hand make MORE cloth napkins than I have so I wont ever have to buy paper napkins for a party again. I am also going to score more plates, so my guests wont have to use paper.

I bought 12 bowls at the dollar store (cheaper than goodwill!!) to add to my already large soup bowl collection. I also bought 10 ss soup spoons from the dollar store too.

A good friend told me where to get a nice ss soup ladle too. :)

I worked part time in a seafood department where we wrapped everything in white butcher paper. Well, not the sloppy marinaded items or salads.
I loved the paper and have it in my kitchen for sandwiches. I use tape, but cotton string would not be out of the question if I could find a reasonably priced spool of it. That's what they used to use.

In London I had fish and chips in newspaper. Works fine.

Butcher paper that I've bought recently is coated with plastic! Yikes! Can you still get the "real" stuff?

Good job, BBH! I made butterflies from wallpaper sample books for my last outdoor party and wrote people's names on them and rubber-banded them to the drinking glasses.

I think it is cool to have plates and napkins coordinating but not matching. Or not even coordinating! I like botanical themes for fabric, and for dishes, I like the hand-thrown or hand-painted look and also botanical or plain, so I pick them up on clearance racks and people actually comment on them!

I don't use mayo on sandwiches if I'm packing them anyway. Soggy bread is yucky unless it's bread pudding. Then its yummmm :drool
What about those steel containers? Anybody try them yet?
I have been using a Tiffin for my lunches this year. It's gotten a lot of comments. I do like it but of course it can't be used in the microwave so I keep a glass plate, pottery bowl and a mug in my room if I need to do that. The clasps are a little difficult for my 7 year old to open on his own. He's declined to have one of his own so far. He does have several plastic Japanese Bento Boxes which he loves. There is an entire thread on Bento Boxes over on BYC if you want to check it out.
For the fridge I use mostly glass refrigerator boxes. Our food co-op carries unbleached waxed paper and waxed paper bags, but now I'm not sure about them.

Actually, I don't worry quite as much about a sandwich, which is dry, coming into contact with plastic as much as I do liquids. This thread really illustrates how hard it can be to live a healthy lifestyle in today's world. But the sharing of ideas is wonderful!

Sally, did you know that rinsing your dishes doesn't affect how clean they get in the dishwasher, compared to ones that aren't rinsed?

Atleast thats what I've read, apparently some researchers tried it out.

We ony run the dishwasher when its completely full, so any food thats dried and stuck on would be harder to get off, I would think, but who knows.

My dad rinses his plates and glasses but no one else does, I'm the main person emptying the dishwasher and I haven't noticed any difference so far.

BB, our dishwasher is very very old! But after you mentioned that it was plastic (Oh, my! What isn't plastic in the kitchen!!) I think I'm going to just go back to washing by hand. My mother always said, "clean as you go!" and it worked like a charm last night with up to 15 people here... though I did use the dishwasher, I rinsed each bowl etc first. (I could have washed them by hand just as fast!)

Free, that is a good idea with the butterflys for drink name tags. I have different colored glasses ranging from blues, pinks, yellow and greens, people did a good job of keeping up with their glass.

I love the little charms that you can attach to the stems of the glasses, I saw some really cool ones at Pier 1 yesterday. I think I can make my own though. That would even be a great holiday gift idea!!

Hen.23, I love that container!! :thumbsup

The sad thing is that all the food in the supermarket is sold in pastic, such as cheeses and yogurt! I asked for pork shoulder and they wrapped it up in plastic on a styrofoam tray. :/

I know this is all the more reason to get that little sheep preggos so I can join the ranks of ye old milkers!

At the farmer's market today, the delicious Pacific smoked King Salmon comes in shrink wrapped plastic. IT (plastic) is everywhere! I never thought about it until recently, I used to buy that fish each weekend too! Today I thought twice. :hu

I know it is impossible to outlaw plastic 100%, but at least I am aware now how it has infiltrated my kitchen!

My goal is to reduce it where I can, and not worry too much about it where I can't. The main goal being, of course, maintaining the last little bit of my sanity! :D

BBH, mine is too!!!! But it really needs some plastic.......surgery!

You know that is why wedding dresses are white, don't you? So the dishwasher will match the stove and refrigerator! :p
