you need to call around to your local farms and see if they have old bales of hay and straw that they will give you.
And ask on craigs list for bags of mulchy type things.

I plant lots of things in layers of hay, leaves, poo and a little bit of dirt sprinkled on top.
No better time then now to start.
Even my pots and raised beds are done this way.
I have definately got to look for some alternatives here. Guess there is no better place/time to start than here and now. :hu

Thanks BB :hugs :) How's that precious little doll baby doin? She is SO gorgeous! :love

What about digging a small "trench" that would be the row you plant the seeds? In a wheelbarrow or such, whip up your "potting soil" and fill the trench with that. Then mulch the heck (got free newspapers from local free publications??) out of the rest of the garden in between the rows.

Plowing up the whole garden looks nice, but is so over-rated
.
And its so unhealthy for the soil.
Having spent many a long Spring weekend plowing my grandpa's fields in my younger days, it does look so perty when you're done though.... :)
And it's a HUGE accomplishment ;) It is good for our soil BB. All that clay needs aeration. Unfortunately it aint gettin it this year.

hey don't give out free newspapers around here that I know of...but I guess I can do some more raised beds and do the rest with a shovel. I was just hoping to not have to. I am SO behind right now on this stuff :th Still have a goat shed to finsih tomorrow too. Then I guess I better get to digging. I needed to already have my peas planted. This is just such a bummer. I guess I am SO aggravated because I was not prepared for the situation, I HAD someone coming out, but the other half of the deal backed out TODAY with no notice and just left me to figure it out on my own. sometimes folks can be such inconsiderate blithering toads.
You would not believe how many people have boxes full of newspapers and cardboard sitting in there garages. Just have to get the word out that you need it.

You can do it!

All the more reason to mulch it into better soil ;)
I have seen clay "gardens" turned into rich black soil by way of layering "junk".

She is doing great.
Thinking about posting another pic. I am leery of putting too many out there in the public :)

I'm channelling the ticked off southern with irish temper! I wonder if my "coop goop" from this last cleaning(2 days ago) would be too hot still? It is full of hay and bedding mixed with the poo.....bet it'd be useless for anything but plant murder. :/ I gotta figure this thing out pretty quick or I'll have nothing.
