OH! I can put the peppers in the flower bed again, and I can plant some other stuff in the front bed that requires some shade, and....oh dang, I got this! I just won't have many flowers this year :gig
Who needs flowers anyway? The only ones I plant anymore are Nasturtiums, cause we can eat them.

i think I'll dig out the Irises and some of the lillies and probably half of the Gladiolous and put in a bunch of edible yummies. The roses, stay. I think DH would cry if I took those, and technically they are edible :sick

ETA: Oh and those stupid azalea bushes have GOT to find a new home! They overgrow and trip me up on the walkway :somad Been meaning to do that for a while now anyway.

*whew* the roses must stay, IMHO. I love roses (and glads). I do have some hyssop stuck in among the fragrant ornamentals (for butterflies and hummingbirds) in the back around the patio.

Yeah roses stay. DH would get rid of me before he'd get rid of those  ;)

Anna I am going to seriously start looking into grants. :) What did you go for?
Remember, if you apply and get accepted to a school, their financial aid department can often help you with getting the grants and loans and scholarships you'll need. That's their job - to get the money for students who have need.

I did cognitive science. It was fun - something I've always wanted to study and finally got a chance to, thanks to DH (and the options he got from his employer.)

Don't forget to rotate the crops. Put peppers in a different bed than they were last year. Peppers, tomatoes, potatoes and eggplant are the same family, iirc, and should be rotated to avoid letting any diseases catch up to them.

I would take the Azaleas!! But, it is WAY TOO HOT here for them! I love them so much!! I have grown some in pots over the years. They are hard to keep going here in the desert. Even moving them to the shade doesn't help. They HATE it here!!

I'm rather late in this conversation, but here's what I think:

Screw the tilling. I agree with BB, the layering of anything organic you can find, straw, poo, cut grass, leaves, paper, etc. Just put it on top of your cruddy soil. Add a bit of dirt and plant away. All that straw and organic matter will help hold moisture so you don't have to water as often.
And you don't have to have stuff in rows, either. If you have a place in between a couple flowers, put in a pepper plant. Do a search for potagers, and you'll see what I mean. Gorgeous gardens with edibles everywhere.

Your garden will get better each year. Even my own cruddy clay areas are breaking up. And just do a manageable area. Then a year from now, you can do another area to expand your food production area.

It's okay to get mad and frustrated, we all have been there. Now it's time to ask yourself how you can still accomplish what you want with what you got. Go for it, you can do it!
