Same here. I have all kinds of wood chucks, sawdust, etc from cutting and splitting wood, but didn't really want to just put it in my garden.
Dust. Hmmm. I would add it to Huglebeet beds. Along with lots of pee for nitrogen.Wannabefree said:Yeah I have a 15 gallon container of sawdust too that I am saving for......something Tell me what to use it for BB!
I will be journaling all my explorations into it as well. Its going to be a fun year for sure.Wannabefree said:Hugelbeets are kinda weird. One site says tomatoes and peppers aren't crazy about them That is mostly what I want to grow. I could do cukes and squash in them though. I HAVE to try this! I have the perfect place, and we have a LOT of logs from where we cut down a bunch of trees last year, plus the hickory that fell in that storm, and it is cut up already OH! Those stumps are hollow....wonder if tomatoes and peppers would grow in there like natural pots for them...my head hurts...all the possibilities! I'm gonna have an awesome garden this year!!!
Maybe what I need to do is put all my chips and sawdust down w/the animals until fall. Then, add it to the garden.Bubblingbrooks said:Dust. Hmmm. I would add it to Huglebeet beds. If it was chips I would say let the chickens and goats pee and poop on it first.
We have a bucket style outhouse set up for summer use, and keep a bucket of dust next to it for covering the poo.
We are setting up a long term composter for that this summer.
3 years in warmer states. Probably 5 for us.
I am adding a pee bucket so we are separating everything as well.
I'm out of tires at the moment. I must go looking for some more. Those things are coming in handy Plus I NEED some more for my tater stacks anyway.Bubblingbrooks said:I will be journaling all my explorations into it as well. We use tires for our squash.
Layer hot manure, leaves, old hay and dirt.
Add crushed egg shells under the transplant to prevent rot, and the plants go crazy!
You will need to add LOTS of nitrogen to it first.Wannabefree said:I wonder if I could just add it to the bottom of the tomato planting hoes in the hollow stumps though to build up for drainage and then top with soil....I don't have an outhouse Yet anyway I have lots of spent bedding and a lot more coming with all the new chickies. This is gonna be so cool, and I can teach my kiddo and neices and nephew how to plant this way too. Now I can't wait to get back outside. DD is out for Spring Break this week, so we can really get a few of these going
I have lots of chicken poop, so put it in first, then some sawdust, or mix it with the sawdust, then soil on top?Bubblingbrooks said:You will need to add LOTS of nitrogen to it first.Wannabefree said:I wonder if I could just add it to the bottom of the tomato planting hoes in the hollow stumps though to build up for drainage and then top with soil....I don't have an outhouse Yet anyway I have lots of spent bedding and a lot more coming with all the new chickies. It will suck the life out of the soil and plant other wise.
