Yesterday, 5 quarts of posole, a seriously delicious pork, hominy and ancho chile stew.

Today, ham was 68 cents a pound at WinCo. Bought two. Looks like six quarts and five pints.

Did a full count of my food storage, non food storage and jars last night and posted it on my blog. I feel relatively well-prepared for almost anything. Good feeling for an old lady who lives alone and has no security blanket other than what she stores up !!!!

I PUT SOMETHING IN A JAR!

It may not seem like much, but today I made 6 pints of dill green beans... it's the first thing I've ever canned in my life.

Over Christmas I plan to make the apple butter with RedHots recipe that someone posted...

I don't have a pressure canner, so I'm starting simply with hot water bath stuff and learning as I go :) Eventually I'll get all the equipment accumulated.

Oh, I am SO excited for you ! Canning gives you such a sense of accomplishment and security. It's just fantastic...please keep us informed of your progress! If I had pom poms, I would cheer for you ! (My sister got the pom poms in the family...but she had to buy them.)

Ok, if "pom poms" means what I think it means I am roflmbo!

I am canning marmalade! Strawberry-lemon and orange-lemon. Sooo yummy. The oranges are from my yard and the lemons are from a friend's yard.

Its also my first experience with Pomona pectin. I think I like it.

Thats the brand name.

It is low sugar and uses a calcium mix -in a seperate packet. It is not pre-measured and actually encourages experimentation with your jam. I'm used to the "don't mess with this recipe or your jam will be a disgrace" brands.

I bought it at Sprouts.
