Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations
Robert Montgomery

Did you know that EVERY civilization on earth has helped to erode our topsoil. No topsoil, no crops; no crops, no livestock; no crops, NO FOOD! I am NOT into scaring everyone, BUT, the point of this book is we cannot erode away our soil by bad soil management through destructive crops, lack of manuring, and lack of crop rotation. We ALSO need to build it up, and it is possible, and NUMEROUS civilizations have figured out how to do so, but the wisdom has often been lost. THEN, it's rediscovered as "new science." My environmental biology professor suggested a rotation of 5 crops, but all I see in the field behind and surrounding MY property is corn, soybeans, corn, soybeans---sometimes winter wheat.

GREAT READING!

(BTW, I posted about this book, but I guess you didn't notice. :( )

Excuse my error in punctuation:

The Maltese Falcon
Dashell Hammett
I loved that book so much that in college I had a Siamese cat named "Dashell"!

Ok, if you guys like Gone with the Wind, then you probably already know about one of my all time fav's Lonesome Dove!! Then there is also The Thornbirds...ending I hated, but the rest was tons of fun. Though I didn't particularly like that Priest/Cardinal. :rant ...pervert.

I'm like you D4Y, my parents were double majors both of their second ones were in English. We had no TV growing up and as long as we were reading in bed, we had no curfew!!

I've got it on hold! It should be great motivation for the hard work at the beginning and ending of each season in building up the soil. Thanks :)

I was the first college grad in my extended family (so no English majors), but my parents were/are voracious readers and very self educated. The way my mom got my brothers into reading was offering them the choice of going to bed or reading in bed. Good one, mom! I use that with my son, too :D No TV growing up or now, so reading is the way we get our entertainment.

I, on the other hand, was such an obsessive reader that taking away reading privileges was one way I was disciplined. I used flashlights, got up at 3 a.m. sometimes, read in the car for 5 seconds under each street light and even--I can't believe it!--sometimes read as a teenager while driving the car!

I'm doing my best to hook my kids. So far, comics are their biggest fascination. I will keep doing whatever I can to give them this love for reading.

ETA: When my mom and MIL saw me packing books for my honeymoon, they tried to intervene. My future husband had planned a week of fishing in Canada, and I knew this marriage needed me to have some books along if that was to be our honeymoon! It was great--I read to my heart's content, my husband fished at the other end of the boat, and we had a great time :D

:yuckyuck

My father was always afraid of fires, so he made sure we all had a flashlight next to our bed...little did he know! (Wait, maybe he did!)

The end of OverEating by David A. Kessler

The Green Smoothies Diet by Robin Openshaw

Sounds appetizing, huh? :p I am looking for more ways to put fresh foods into the diets in this house. I really do not like to eat a large amount of fruit and veggies, but I think my body needs more because my energy levels are so low. Now I just need to find a Vitamix or BlendTec for cheap, 'cause I ain't paying 400 bucks for a blender!
