decided to significantly reduce the amount of food in the cupboard, the beans, rices, lentils, quinoa, barley, split peas --- not going to buy more food (ok, except for fresh fruit, butter, cream, coffee, greens, cheese) til I get that backlog down!

I figure I can eat out of the cupboard for a good month or two without buying more!

Every year lately I have been doing a garden seed inventory on New Years Eve ( I know, how fun). I write down all the seed packets I have, how much is in them and how old they are. Only then do I actually seriously go through the seed catalogs I have been drooling over as they arrive. New years day and a few days after I filter the catalogs out with the list of replacements and new projects. It is amazing how much shipping charges vary. I saved over $50 on 2 blue berry bushes and a dozen lily plants by not ordering from a catalog that said spend $50 ang get $25 off. Right, with their inflated prices and horrible shipping charge I paid less. So have learned to be more careful.
This something I will be working on soon, too. Especially with seeds like tomatoes and peppers, I find the seed packets can last at least 2 years.

:woot We are expecting a hard freeze here which has not happened since 1998. I am happy to say I am prepared! Since I joined this SS site in July I have stocked up with every paycheck. Everyone is crazy here at the stores and I used to be one of them. I am ready for the next 4 days. I did go get dog food at Kroger and found $3.99 Oatmeal, Sunflower/Flax seed breads were marked down to $1.00, I got 6 loaves for the freezer! :weee

I went through the seed catalogs, figured out that everything I would want is close to $300... went on Ebay and got 54 different packs of seeds for $14US, shipping included. Mostly heirloom tomatoes and varieties of hot peppers.... SO excited for it to arrive (I got a few packs from the same seller last year, with a 90% germination rate, so I do trust them)

I also learned to bake Rosemary foccacia bread that I've been paying $4.50 a loaf for at the grocery store... it's sooooo good, I'm an addict :)

Good idea! I've been wanting to plant a fruit orchard for several years now, but haven't been able to afford the trees. So I decided instead of saving for a few years to buy a bunch I'm just going to buy a couple at a time. My neighbor bought a couple dozen on ebay year before last and had good luck with them. I had forgotten all about that, I'll check ebay.

We got a load of firewood. I had a bit of firewood stored on the patio of my house that DD lives in. She doesn't like to use the fireplace, so I figured we might as well go and get it. It ended up being a truckfull of nice chopped wood. We also broke down some of the wood we had lying about the place from trees we cut down last year. So now we have enough wood for a few weeks.
There is a lot more wood at DD's for us to haul out, whenever we feel like it.
It sure feels good to have a bunch of wood stashed and ready. :celebrate

I also decided to cut up an old t shirt into little pieces to use instead of tp for #1. They are easy to wash and should save us some $$ on tp. After all, it can't be any worse than washing diapers.

To save a little $ , today I canned our leftover ham from New Years into Hawaiian Ham Spread. It made 7 half pint jars that will be quite a few sandwiches for my family later on in the year.:):):)

I wondered what I could do for a tp replacement if TSHTF - thanks for the idea.
Hope to not need it but it's still a smart way to handle it.
