Nothing biblical. All it would take is an event that stopped the trucks from rolling or the electricity to stop flowing. We like to think of ourselves as being civilized and enlightened, as having out grew the savage tendencies of the past. Some people do tend to come together in times of crisis, and you see the best of human nature. Unfortunately, that seems to be the exception, and not the rule.

There is a very thin veneer of civility in our society. To quote James Rawles in his book How to Survive TEOTWAKI, "You take the average Urbanite or Suburbanite and get him excessively cold, wet, tired, hungry, and/or thirsty and take away his television, beer, drugs, and other pacifiers, and you will soon see the savage within. It is like peeling the skin off an onion - remove a couple of layers and it gets real smelly".

You see the veneer wear through on occasion, a verdict that a portion of society doesn't like, law enforcement becomes non-existent (think of the days following Katrina), or for some just their sports team winning a championship is an excuse.

I want to believe that people will come together in these times we are discussing, but for people to come together they need hope. We have grown so dependent on technology for our survival that, should that technology break down, there would be no hope for the vast majority. An EMP attack with it's subsequent loss of the grid for years, would only see a relatively small number of deaths in the first days. In the long term, it would mean the death of perhaps 90 to 95% of the US population.

As to what would our country look like after such an event. It's hard for me to see it rebuilt as it was originally founded, a constitutional republic. We were the only such country to ever have had such a government, and we have long since lost it. We used to say "these united states", now we say "the united states". The first referred a country made up of a collection of sovereign states, the latter to a sovereign country made up of states. I doubt that we will ever regain what we have lost.

Edited to correct FFS

I didn't know you were an Ayn Rand fan, Zilla. I so need to get that book now.

Every time I think of economical disaster, turmoil, and war in the US, I think of, and look back to what happened to the Jews during the Holocaust.

Hubby & I are both fans. Hubby read Atlas Shrugged at 13! :th

That's another thing I have noticed...a rise in antisemitism. Coincidence? I think not.

I'm wondering how you folks will grow your foods and keep animals for food when you may have to protect them 24/7. I know you have guns and ammo....many people do.

Could you protect your stores from the US army? In the past, armies just confiscated private stores....could you fight them ALL off?

I read a book once about a nuclear war and some communities and peoples that survived and one group was trying to grow some oats wheat to feed their horses and themselves.

Their guard alerted them to all come running one day and asked, "What do I do?" and pointed towards the field....it was full of extremely emaciated people on their hands and knees eating the grains.

Children, old people, mothers, husbands.....trying to survive on your fields. So hungry. Children crying and barely able to walk from hunger.

Would you shoot them? Would you share, knowing it could mean the death of your clan if you gave into the hungry hoards?
And that's the rub... and reason for the topic :)

Exactly Boyd.

Can you save the hoard?

Will giving in to the hoard actually help them in the long run?

Can the hoard be taught?

Perhaps it is. I am not sure, I just know the world is a scary place. And my grandma always told me the lord helps those who help themselves. Well, I don't want to be left out in the cold :)

in a SHTF scenario cities are a waste. Too big, too open and too hard to defend. Small communities and a back to the land lifestyle. Would I help the Horde? Perhaps.. If they had skills, could contribute and didn't cause such a drain on the community.

In all Honesty, think Tri-States Philosophy from the old William Johnstone Ash's series. That's how I see things going.

When it happens... whether biblical, political, economical, environmental, or hostile actions force a society to fall back, such as the great depression, Katrina, cival wars etc.. the families that put back, defended what is theirs and worked within their communities were the ones who survived.

How many of those folks did you watch on CNN sitting on their roof, with 6 pack of beer they saved from the fridge?

Not to many I'm betting.. because they bugged out with their preps.. and are now sitting fat n sassy!!!

But nobody answered the question. :) I know you would say, "It all depends..." but if it were an immediate situation like this book described and you had to make the decision to kill that 4 yr. old that was trampling on and eating your hard earned crops before they were ruined.....would you kill them? Could you?

Everyone talks big about shooting armed or even unarmed marauders that would seek to steal your stores....but what if it were not just men with weapons? What if it were masses of people who were so hungry that they no longer recognized the threat of guns?

Most people out there can't bear to kill a chicken. Could you kill a starving child?
