Thanks everyone. My beading class yesterday was so much fun. I am now cross eyed, only got about 7 rows into a herringbone stitch bracelet that only has 9 rows across. And it only took me 2 hours. LOL. But I think I got the technique down. At this rate I will be deaf, dumb and blind before I finish the thing. And who knows, I may not finish it. It was just an outing and something to do. I met some really nice people who think I have lost my mind for being SS. It only took me about 3 sentences into my answering the question, "Well Wanda, what do you do?" to see the deer in the head light looks on their faces. Then the few comments of: A) Oh, I get my chicken at the store, my grandmother had chickens and they are nasty. B) I don't eat rabbit, or any other wild game. C)You mean you actually can your own food? Is that safe? So they moved right on to the topic of the day which had nothing to do with beading. But apparently Lindsay Lohan or Lohen or however you spell or say her name is either in jail, out of jail or should be in jail. :th I still had a great time, I just never contributed to that conversation. I just counted stitches and went cross eyed.

but I sold from close to 300 chickens and have 55 left. Those 55 are going within the next month and I am going to get about 6 younger hens for my personal eggs...no more selling. I am done.

I am now in the mindset as much as I love SS, life is to be easier for me anyway I can make it lol SS can be hard work and takes time. I am going to use more conveniences in life and go from there with a smile on my face haha I hope you get that smile back also!!

take care
I think many times we bite off more than we can chew. I have only had 3 to 6 hens for several years now. In addition to about 25 to 30 meat chickens a year that covers our needs pretty well.

When you have 300 chickens and are selling eggs you are really farming, not just being SELF sufficient. I have to keep reminding myself of that. Plenty enough for me and mine, but not so much that it adds to the workload unnecessarily.

We all seem to tear out a wall, redo a room or whatever else to add to our workload anyway. We shouldn't get too haywire with our animals and gardens so we still have time for life's little remodeling sessions. :p

it is time to stop
I wasn't haywire on my SS, lol, I was in a business that now I am truly tired of and am going back to easier lifestyle lol

but you are sooooo right, so many times we overload ourselves, and why? hmmm :p

AFTER I sent that I realized that farming for a living IS being self sufficient. After all what is more SS that earning all of the money you need from the sweat of your brow?

I hope that you guys can be able to back it down to a more personal level and really enjoy life again. Farming for a living is one of the most demanding jobs out there ... you have earned a nice relaxing rest from it. :)

I love that look as well!

What is funniest to me is that the next time you go to that class there will probably be somebody that will ask you to tell more about this lifestyle. It takes them a bit to process the info then folks start getting curious.

If you really want to bring folks over to the "dark side" bring some homemade bread and jam or other SS type treat to the class next time! ;)

Don't you just love that "look"?

I am finding that I either get the grossed out beyond belief look or I end up in an hour conversation with someone about our "ways"

I just about had a cow yesterday when my husband told me that he would really like to do something like Holderreads....selling birds and breeding and such. Just when I think I've heard it all he says something like that.

I'm glad you got out and did something fun for yourself....even if it did make you cross eyed and blind

:hugs

you hit it for me
I love dirt, horses, gardens, etc etc
but then we took it "into a farm biz"
I went from a relaxing enjoying lifestyle with dirt and horses into a biz that darn near killed us lol backbreaking work for sure
yes, time to be on a personal level again---the joy of enjoying my "soon to be new" horse and gardening lol

I am losing it. I can't believe I forgot to tell ya'll. They are filming the movie "The Help" here in Mississippi. They filmed for several days here in Jackson in what is called the Fondren area. For days I had a horrible time getting to work because I drive right through Fondren to get to work. It was so cool though. They had all these old 50's and 60's cars from the local Antique Cars Club, they shipped a bus in from Hollywood. They refaced a whole streets worth of buildings.
Where I took my class yesterday is across the street from where they did part of the filming. All the store owners got to choose which changes they wanted to keep, if any. I was so hoping they would choose to keep most of them because Fondren is a historical district anyway and the changes were so appropriate for the area.
Alma, who owns the beading store, told me that what I see is what is staying now. Most of the owners kept the majority of changes. Some of the signs had to come down since the movie company made a professional nursing staff place a delicatesin. But all the awnings and paint jobs will still be there. And several places kept the old looking signs.
The movie company has now moved to Greenwood MS to film some more. I can't wait til the movie next year.
