Set up the brooder in the coop for my 7 little araucana babies. Had no choice because the ducklings are starting to hatch out. I have one baby Rouen and one Peking, so far. Hoping for a decent hatch rate.
I haven't been picking up duck eggs for a few days.....or goose eggs for that matter. Not sure if thats it for the season or if they just taking a few days off or what. If I get a few babies worth troubling myself about, I'll have to set up my 'for sale' brooder under the house.
I was worried that the 100 wt bulbs wouldn't be warm enough, but the chicks look fine....running all over the brooder. None of them huddled up together. I hope I bought enough 100 wt bulbs. If I'm lucky enough, I can still get my hands on some. It doesn't look like I have enough for more than maybe 3 years.
So I have extention cords spralled out all over the place, just like I didn't want.....one thing at a time.

Well, today is my youngest's DD's 6th birthday. Family is planning a trip to the Audibon Zoo and the Aquarium of the Americas next week to celebrate. I suggested that we just park at the zoo....do the zoo, then take the river boat to the aquarium and back again, when we done, then maybe eat supper in route to our bayou at a really awesome seafood restraunt.
Daddy was aggrevated today, bigtime. I think his lack of freedom and physical limitations are really getting to him. Went with DS to find some chores that needed tending and we decided that Dad's lawnmower needed to be repaired. Somehow Dad thought I wanted the repairman to come pick up the lawnmower and was fussing me for throwing away $25....which I informed him that DB was bringing the mower. He wanted to go outside and loosen 2 bolts to free the mower so it could be moved......oh yeah. Well, DB shows up and he managed to preform some kinda magic trick on the mower and get it started.....thank God!! So the yard is a bit less hairy.
Well, I only have 5 dozen eggs picked up to incubate, so I think I'll put the eggs in tomorrow....hopefully with 6 dozen. Still not seeing duck or goose eggs. Musta gone on strike. Momma would be telling me to check with the moon and all. Never quite understood any of that moon stuff, but Momma sure knew how to hatch out some baby birds.
Really need to do some flylady chores. My life is outta control and its starting to show all over the house.

Hatching by the signs of the moon is like hatching any other time ;) The differences are slight, like barometric pressure, humidity, etc. but it does generally have a good hatch rate. I have experimented with both hatching and planting by the signs. I can't tell a huge difference myself, but some folks swear by the stuff and won't dare plant or do anything else when the signs aren't right.

Glad the mower got going! Hope ya'll have a wonderful trip for little DD's birthday :)

Sounds like you have a nice day planned.

Glad you were able to get your dad's mower started.

Okay, so this morning, when I was still at work, little sis called me to tell me that she has reason to believe that Daddy got up thru the night and WALKED. She is hard of hearing and believes he used that to his advantage, but didn't hide the evidence. I needed a nap when I came home and got a call from Daddy, advising me that he was walking without assistance. I told him that was good, but I didn't want him to take any chances.....please use his walker or cane. Not sure if he thought I was done or if he doesn't like his oldest child bossing him around, but the line was disconnected. DS is now checking on him.
Gotta go do my Lenten, Friday evening Catholic thing, then probably picking up some big fish meals at BK.....DS to ask Daddy if he wants one.
Well the chicken eggs are in the incubator for the Easter hatch. I did find 6 duck eggs hidden in tractor tires. 2nd day without eating starches and I feel good enough....hoping those big fish meals don't tempt me too much. I have other plans for me alone.
Putting my araucana eggs in the bator in another few days. Don't want them somehow getting mixed up with the 'for sale' chicks. Another duckling is working his way outta his egg right now. Those cold fronts have taken their toll against my hatch rate. I really gotta think of a better place for the bator. DH doesn't want it in the house because of the smell.....but that means bator vs. natural elements.....not always good. But we get by. Still do way better than sell of just eggs.

I don't know if that's part of my problem w/using a bator. I don't have good luck w/one at all. I don't know if the temps in my house fluctuate too much or what.

My bator is in my house, but it doesn't smell. I keep it pretty clean between hatches and have never noticed a smell :hu I do candle my eggs three times before hatch too though, if any eggs are going bad the get removed immediately. I haven't had a splodey one yet ;)

SO GLAD your daddy is walking! That's good, and I do hope he is using his cane as well. :)

Things have been crazy. Daddy spent some time in the hospital due to a UTI, but his doctor wanted a psych referal, so he was transfered to a behavior unit for 8 days....he wasn't happy. Well they diagnosed him with dementia and he somehow thinks he has only about 3 months to live. I did tell him that he could go several years with that and could even be happy and productive, provided he takes his meds, to which he told me he hopes I'm right.
Well, I happened to talk to a man I knew since childhood and after a while told him about our citrus delema. He wanted me to call his cousin, who runs a tug boat operation with 126 boats to their name. I sent her a message, but also asked my old friend to talk to her about my situation. Well they want 2 boxes of oranges 3X's a week. In other words 240Lbs of oranges a week. So the first day I am to deliver is Monday and I went to the orchard to harvest. SOMEBODY WIPED US OUT!!! I had only one tree with about 30 oranges in it. So I had to go in my parent's front yard to get Monday's order ready. I think the most I'll be able to do is 2 weeks worth of oranges. That really sucks. But I'll talk to the grocery manager at the office and explain what happened and make sure I stay on good terms with the company, so I have my foot in the door come next fall when the satsumas are ripe. If I give him a heads up, so he can order what he needs before I tell him sorry AJ...thats it, then at least I don't leave them in a bind. I'm lucky I at least have a few trees to fall back on. Hope it works out because if I can do business in the fall, I'm sure Daddy would be happy.....all him and Momma's hard work will be rewarding us.
