Thank goodness that some of you have the skill to make the world a more beautiful place - just by picking up a pencil. It just makes me jealous sometimes. :/

One of the few things I miss living in sunny california is the incredible peacefullness after a snow storm. How does one describe the beauty of the stillness!! Several folks have posted pictures with snowcapped fenceposts and trees laden with the white powdery substance. How do you describe the smell and the crisp feeling in the air? It is as if you woke up for the first time on the first day, so prestine and absolutely beautifull.
Of course it helps if you know you have a nice warm stove and hot chocolate to come back inside too. ;)

There is a certain peace after a snowstorm, isn't there? I've never heard it explained like that before...but I think I would really miss it if I didn't have it, even though as soon as Christmas is done I am eagerly waiting for it to melt!

I think it is only nice, when you don't have to go somewhere like work. Then you can appreciate the beauty.
It is no fun when you have to drive in it, slipping and sliding or walk through it, getting it in your boots and making your feet wet and cold. or when it turns to slush... more slipping and sliding
Yeah, I guess I'll stay in this part of the country for now and do without the snow :p

You are so right, FD! It is like that after a snow storm....like the world is clean and fresh, crisp and cold. I do like driving in the fresh snow before anyone else has been on the roads....it is so very quiet and, if the snow is a heavy one, the woods like a fairy kingdom. Absolute silence, blue hollows and shadings....like the world is holding it's collective breath until that chunk of snow falls from a branch, or a bird takes flight, a rabbit jumps and runs.

BBH, I don't know that I could have done anything differently to spare my sheeples some angst. This is just how things worked out and I think it would have been much worse if there hadn't been two of them. Leaving one sheep alone would have been reprehensible, I think.

I like to pair all my animals for companionship purposes. Two Bites had no like species pal, she was really failing to thrive and she was in danger of hurting my Bettys with her monthly urges.

After seeing how much fat this calf DID NOT have, it was probably a mercy killing. She would have had to be cold in this weather, even with her long fur. She ate plenty, but I don't think she was absorbing her nutrients and didn't have the right culture in her gut to do so.

It's really hard enough on a farm setting to insure that I am not saddened, let alone the other animals. I try but, in the end, things must die or leave the place.

So far, we have ground up her haunches and received 22 qts. of lean meat. She had no backstrap to speak of.

We are currently cooking a very large pot of dog food that is composed of organ meats and such, added veggies and fruits, chicken bones, beef bones for the marrow content, etc.

I really had hoped to add some fat to the pot, but, alas, the calf really did just have about two bites of fat on her..... :p

For the journal:

First huge pot of homemade dog food~:sick If my dog actually eats this glop she is truly desparate....which is the good thing about dogs, isn't it? :D They will willingly eat all our cooking mistakes, lick the bowl and wag for more! Gotta love an animal like that!

Next pot will be done quite differently. This one, we just added chunks of meat, saved meat scraps, carrot pulp, squash, apples....you name it, we dumped it in the pot. This did not allow for adequate cooking, plus cooking on an electric stove is for the birds. :tongue Too much in the pot, too intense and small a heat source makes for undercooked but burnt smelling nastiness. :sick

Next pot will be meat and bones, seasonings, broth only and all other ingredients added slowly.

But then, this is what life is all about....trying, failing, learning and trying again. Only the dog really suffers...... :p

Will be taking the hide to the laundry mat this evening for a double washing and will apply salt tomorrow.

Supposed to warm up to the 40s this week!!!!! :weee :celebrate

Okay....I'm going to tell you guys something and you mustn't make fun.....

I've been watching the night sky for some years now...it's one of my favorite pasttimes and it brings me much peace and serenity. Last night I saw something quite different....and, no, before you ask, I was NOT drinking! My mother and my boy saw this also, so it's not a hallucination, unless it's a collective one.

All the stars were out big and bright, but three separate stars in the sky were quite distinctive and some smaller ones we could barely make out. These stars were blinking and had alternate green, red, blue lights and some rays of light would shoot out now and again. Two of the "stars" would move slightly now and again but mainly stayed in their respective areas. I didn't have a telescope and have often wished that I did, but we were quite fascinated to watch these stars and the twinkling lights.

I've often seen stars that appear red, some that give a green appearance, often even seen stars that twinkle....but I've never seen all this happen at once to a single star, let alone three big and bright stars.

Being that this is WV and I am indeed a hillbilly, with 80s hair and all, I will not claim to have seen a UFO~too cliche. But, I did see a remarkable, stellar phenomenon in the sky last night that was quite beautiful and unusual. :)

Wow Bee, I am just trying to catch up on everyones journals....you have had so much going on there. As for the little cow..I just know I would not be able to do that here. Hubby would never help with that. I can't even get him to butcher chickens! Damned city guy! LOL
As for the sheepies...yes, they do know when a flock mate has gone missing. I have been dealing with this myself....with the loss of the 2 Ewe's. Its so sad, to see them wander, calling, and searching. Breaks my heart. They do get better tho...over time.
Mine seem to be calming down now...and have started eating better. We are supposed to get weather in the 40's for a few days...maybe this will help everyones spirits. :)

Bee I took my sheep hides to the car wash! I hung them on the mat rack and hit them with the high pressure hose and soapy water and then the high pressure rinse for a couple of cycles. It worked great! I think the high pressure hose even removed some of the loose meaty tissue for me.

Just a suggestion instead of the laundry mat. :hu

When we go to the lake and can actually SEE the stars we often see several man made satellites in addition to lots of military airplanes. Some of those are QUITE disturbing to look at. We know however that we are seeing what we are seeing because our lake cabin is on a direct flight path from one Air Force base to another. The also tend to practice low altitude flight drills over the lake. The first time I ever saw a stealth bomber at night was especially strange. So big and black and just filled the sky like an ominous cloud. Depending on how high the satellites are up and how they are positioned. Some appear to hover in the same place and others look like very fast lights streaking across the sky.

It is sad to me. I have an impossible time seeing the stars at home due to Earth clutter and then when I can see the stars the sky is now full of "space junk" as well. :tongue

I was rather disturbed also, when on the last night of my visit to my parents, who are waayy in the country, I saw sooo many planes and not nearly as many stars as I used to as a kid. I could see the glow from the lights from the earth.

Bee, it is weird and awesome to see something strange in the sky. I once saw what appeared to be a really short rocket in board daylight in the country where I grew up. I didn't tell anyone, because I was afraid they'd think I'd gone off my rocker.
