 Tell her you are saving the world one bee at a time! :D

I agree about the animals. My sheep are still as flighty as deer, wary and quick. Their senses don't seem to be dulled by domestication at all...same with the chickens. No pets here...they are all very independent. One can't just walk into my coop and reach down for a chicken...too quick and too wild are they.

I do notice a difference in this visiting ram, but he has spent the majority of his life in a very large barn in a pen with other rams. He isn't outside at night at any time during the year, so I'm thinking his natural instincts are somewhat dulled. He is too easy to catch, by far.

People are always talking about how stupid turkeys are as well and I think the heritage breeds that I have raised in the past are WAY smarter than the average chicken. The broad breasted ones, however do seem a little on the slow side. Their redeeming feature is they all seem so sweet and curious. My bb Bronze follow me everywhere, but the heritage rule the roost.
aint that right!!!

we dont think our turks are dumb at all... we think they just dont like new things. once they get the hang of something then they are all in...but no way they are dumb.

i was just going to talk about this misconception and you beat me to it! yay!

ps that Mal is something else!

When I went to "chick days" I actually heard an older woman telling her friend that turkeys "look up at the sky when it rains and drowned". (? !!!)

I really can't believe people.

My boss's daughter is an animal collector and a PETA supporter...she is 17. She rescues chickens from her aunt's commercial chicken houses on occasion and has a few hens, roos and ducks. She also has a lamb that lives indoors, a mini potbellied pig that did live inside but now lives in a stall in the barn, numerous pit bulls that she has rescued but now live in stalls in the barn, numerous cats, many horses, birds, rats, she did have a deer until it died of seizures....you name it, this kids has it.

Something got into the coop last night and killed all but a chicken and a duck. My boss was telling me about this and I told her it sounded like a coon and she said she didn't think coons killed chickens!!! She thought is was a fox....

Said she had never heard of coons killing chickens...why do folks get into animals without researching things a bit? Their last bottle lamb died from eating the horse's sweet feed and had copper toxicity. This could have been prevented if they had bothered to research this animal before getting one.

I have a sis like this...get an animal first, ask questions later. Always makes me a little exasperated. :/

Well...finally had enough of my younger dog stealing eggs from the outside nests. Had to do some disciplinary action...will find out tomorrow if it worked. He has been sucking eggs for a long time and it is very hard to actually catch him red pawed...but I did today and it was a good opportunity to do a little negative reinforcement.

He hasn't come out of his house since this incident..... :/ He's a smart dog, so it will be interesting to see if he needs a little more education. :p

When my kids were little we had the same kind of problem with them only they were sucking down Oreo cookies!

I liked to buy a package of cookies to give treats from time to time, but every time I did I would wake up the very next morning to find a 1 1/2 pound package of cookies gone! :somad I remembered the old farmer trick for a egg sucking dog and decided to pepper load them. (insert evil smiley here)

Hubby and I opened a new package and carefully scraped out the cream filling from each cookie and replaced it with black pepper, leaving only a ring of filling to conceal the deed. Carefully we replaced the cookies.

Next morning they were all gone again!!! :barnie

We sat the kids down and asked them about the cookies and TOLD them what we had done. "Hmmm I thought they tasted kinda funny." said D1.

Next solution NO more buying any cookies.

I hope your dog is smarter than my kids! ;)

re: killer coon... yep. we get 'oh that poor little thing' from time to time. sure they are cute until they eat the entire clutch of eggs out from under your favorite turkey hen.

i also had a pal have a break down b/c their city was trapping-to-kill a coyote (just one). i honestly didnt know what to say to her. yikes

oh well.

what a waste that a coon ate the chickens before they did.

They would NEVER eat one of their own animals!!! You kiddin'? I get the major stink eye when I mention processing an animal....they ask how I can kill my friends and act like I'm Atilla the Hun.....

I say they finally fulfilled their purpose on this Earth, whether it be by coon or human, they provided food for something. :p

Yet I suppose they ALL eat meat from the local grocery store and eat meat when they go to restaurants as well - don't they?
